McClelland Dairy farmer Lorne Disney of R.R, 3, Woodville, was a happy man last Friday afternoon. Two fertilized eggs had been flushed from the uterus of the best cow in his herd, and quickly implanted in two recipient cows, using a rela- tively new procedure in the dairy industry known as embryo transfer. Mr. Disney will be happier still if in 30 days it's found that the implanted eggs are developing normally, and end up in nine months as two new additions to his herd. Although the procedure of taking fertilized eggs from the uterus of one cow, and implanting them in another has been done for many years, it's only the past couple of years that it could be done in the farmer's barn, non-surgically without any kind of anaesthetic, and at a relatively cheap cost. Last Friday afternoon, veterinarians Dr. Roger Holtby and Dr. Gerry Green went to the Disney farm and in about three hours com- pleted the procedure of flush- ing the eggs and implanting them in two recipient cows. Last May, Dr. Holtby and Dr. Green formed #4 partner: ship as cattle reproductive veterinary specialists, and part of their busy practise consists of the embryo trans- fer procedure. Working out of an office in Sunderland and covering a wide terri: tory which includes Scugog Township, they have been averaging one procedure each week since last May. Firstly, because as many as 28 fertilized eggs can be flushed from one cow at one time and implanted in reci- pients, it allows a farmer the potential to improve his herd over a relatively short period of time. Normally, one cow will be bred once a year and give one calf. Embryo transfers allow the farmer to select the best cow and have her artificially inseminated with semen from a top pedigree bull. The recipient cow which receives a fertilized egg can be a run of the mill animal, but if all goes well nine months later, the calf born will have all the genetic characteristics of the top of the line parents.
