ITROPHIES} I SE oA Broomball action underway by Danny Millar C&B Livestock got two goal outputs from Mark Lee and Larry Page and a single tally from .Doug Scott in defeating Larocque 5-1 on the opening Sunday, Septem- ber 28 of Port Perry Broom- ball Association play at the Scugog Arena. Defending champion Utica Plow Jockeys and Black- stock were 3-1 winners in other contests. Larocque opened the scoring with 7:24 to go in the first period on a goal by Kopie De Jong, assisted by Barry McClure, but C&B got it back before the horn sounded through the arena signifying the end of the first period. Lee and Page scored to give C&B a lead they never relinquised and Lee put them ahead 3-1 on a flip shot over Kevin Beer with 5:16 to go in the middle period. Lee was sent into the clear over the Larocque blue line on a good forward pass by Don Phinney. Harris McClure took the first of three penalties in the second period, a minor for tripping. McClure was nailed for a'five minute major punishment with 32 seconds left in the third period when he lined up Lee for a hard cross check in front of the Larocque net. He will serve at least a one game suspension but because of the nature of the penalty, and the fact that he- was called twice previously, will probably sit out more games. There was one other con- troversial moment and it came in the final period. Robert Evans rushed down left wing and pounded the ball in the direction of the net. Beer could not stop it and it appeared to land inside the cross bar into the top of the net. But it bounced out quickly and play resumed. Evans was so upset he slammed his broom against the post as he was circling the net. That action followed Page's second goal of the afternoon. It came on a hard smash from the face-off --_circle near. the boards with- 11:33 to be contested. Utica looked as though they might have their championship team intact as they got single goals from three different players--Jack Monsma, Mike Mole and Mike Mitchell. They scored * good scoring depth, evidenc- ed by the fact that Monsma was the only player to pick up a second point, assisting on a goal by Mole. Monsma drew first blood on a hard shot from about 25 feet out as he carried the ball in from the boards and let a hard shot go that goalie Rick Arsenault could not handle. The second period was scoreless and was played on fairly even terms. Utica goalie Don Card had to come up with a big stop on Ken Geer early in the last frame in order to preserve his shutout bid. He lost the whitewash attempt. Mitchell took on a defenceman one on one and used him as a screen to drive a shot past Arsenault. Rightwinger Mole's earlier marker was set up from linemate Monsma's shot that missed the net. Mole was standing at the edge of the crease on the other side and deposited the carom off the board past Arsenault. The middle match of the day saw Blackstock triple Brian's Towing on goals by Ibbitson, Ron Wagg. and Steve Hawes. It also saw the only fight of the day when Dave Dalton threw a punch © with three weekend games at Bob Vanderwalk and threw him to the ice with a reverse headlock. Ibbitson opened the scoring after a scoreless first period by beating goaltender Dave Lang on a breakaway with 7:13 gone. It occurred just as Brian's were return- ing to full strength after 3 cross checking penalty. Blackstock went up 2-0 less than a minute later when Wagg pushed in a shot from the left side after he was knocked to the ice. Greg Hildebrand and Hawes trad- ed a goal in the third stanza. There are three broomball games each Sunday after- noon, starting usually at 4:00 p.m. All six league teams play once a week against the alternating opposition. Over the last two years Utica and C&B have been the teams to beat. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., October 1, 1980 -- 13 Senior softball final (From page 12) ed the timely hits. In the fifth, Neals walked the bases. loaded before Bill St. John popped up harmlessly to end the threat. In the next session Evans was hit by a pitch and sacrificed into scoring position before Scott struck out. In the seventh inning, Port had two more runners within scoring distance but once again St. John lined out to end the inning. On the other side of the diamond, the Generals had few chances. Only once did they get a runner to third base. They had a runner at second base in the second' inning. It came as a shock to a lot of people that Port Perry beat Neals in his hometown, especially when he was throwing as well as he was. Over the past couple of seasons Port has had little success against the powerful righthander and the recent win may go far in establish- ing confidence of the Port Perry bat swingers. The game destroyed that aura of invincibility that surrounded Neal's curly head like a halo. If Neals falters, the Generals would likely go with lefthander Fallis, who was pounded in an earlier appearnace against Port, way back in August. This final is going to be a "hot coffee" series. It took so long to get underway because the lower echelon teams were late in finishing up the regular schedule. Then the Nestleton-Ponty- pool round was more than a week in commencing follow- ing Port's three game dis- posal of Janetville. The remainder of the games will be played strictly on week- ends. Port Perry tried to get the series shortened to one game like football, but Pontypool declined. MoJacks suffer three defeats (From page 12) effective penalty killers against Uxbridge. Jobb also had a tally Sunday night. Dave Canning took a five minute major penalty for high-sticking=in---the=third period of the Sunday night game against the Bruins and it allowed the visitors time enough to score two power play goals. Dan Robertson put a shot past Nicholishen eleven seconds after Cann- ing got the gate. Peter Arts got the other one by slipping in a shot from the slot after a pass out from the boards by Robertson. Robertson and Arts combined with import Kipp Rennick to form a potent offensive line for the 'Bruins. After a four goal perform- ance Friday night, Rennick was watched closely by MoJack checkers and was the victim of numerous cheap shots. He was shaken up and had to be removed following a first period hit but did return to score a goal and collect an assist. Despite the close guarding Rennick managed two goals, including the game opener 31 "seconds after the opening face-off. Uxbridge dominated the first period as they jumped into a 4-0 lead on goals by four different scorers. With Canning off for holding, Ken Jordan fired in a wrist shot from the top of the circle after center Fran Van Kessell won a draw. Van Kessell put the Bears ahead 3-0 with a picturesque goal at the 16:11 mark. He Manchester Manchester Trader Sales Whitby stickhandled around one Port backliner and then snapped a wrist shot past Lovering with both teams playing down a man. Owen Jackson got the last goalof the period by shoving "a second rebound past Lovering in a scramble with Port serving a cross check- ing infraction. It came with 31 seconds left. When a team scores that close towards the end of a period, they often will come out flying to start the next frame. But in this match the reverse occurred and it took 3:02 to score three goals. And that was as close as it got. Center Lewko got the first one as he slammed in a shot from the edge of the crease in the first minute of play and Wilbur got the second with Rennick servind a slashing punishment at 2:27. Wilbur took a pass in the slot from the point, wheeled around and put in a wrist shot, making it 4-2. Dave Alexander, a spirited, aggressive winger drew the MoJacks to within a goal by knocking in a shot from fifteen feet in front. Archibald was solid in his stint between the pipes especially for a 32 second stretch when Port was play- ing two men down. He permitted one puck to cross the red line between the pipes in twenty minutes of. action. Brian Nicholson got the fourth MoJack score when he persisted in tipping in a third rebound into the Bruin goal. Jobb added one in the third period. Jobb also got the first goal of the first game against Uxbridge on the first shot on goal, after 19 seconds had elapsed. He led a fine rush down the ice that culminated in his shot under the first of three Bruin netminders. At the other end of the rink, Ken Harman was having a nightmare that all puckstoppers dream about. Seven times in 30 minutes Uxbridge players managed to put pucks past him, sever- al times on defensive lapses. The game was interspers- ed by several scraps, especially in the third period when Port Perry became frustrated. The defence was unable to clear the puck from the strong Uxbridge forecheck- ing and it resulted in the Cubs tying the score 1:05 into the game. Rennick got four first period goals, three of them on power plays. He got the first two in the initial segment off backhand and flip shots, before four minutes had gone by... Rob Garrow took a hook- ing penalty at 7:49 and twenty seconds later Rennick scored from the corner of the net where he was left wide open. He got his other tally after Harman stopped three original shots in a scramble. Through the first forty minutes Uxbridge had managed 30 shots on net. In that same span Port had eleven. Jobb got a goal late in the AT THE CORNER HWY. 12 & HWY. 7A Rentals - Parts - Service - Used Trailers - Interior Showroom -* GLENDETTE * SHAMROCK * UNIK * TRAVELUX * AG JINR second period, making it 5-2 at the time, and Wilbur finished off the Port Perry scoring with 1:19 left in the game on a neat goal after a good head man pass from Garrow-that sprung Wilbur into the clear at the Uxbridge blue line. Wilbur deked goalie Ron Rodriguez and slid it under him. Canning had the most exciting goal of the Bowman- ville fray as he blasted a high hard slap shot into the top of the net from inside the blue line. The MoJacks open their Central League season at home 7:30 P.M. to the Lind- say Muskies on Sunday, October 5. They travel to Cobourg to confront the Cougars the day after.
