Following a closed-door session last week, council named 51-year old Donald 'Evans to the position, repla- cing Rob Richardson, who resigned this summer to take a similar post with Waterloo Region. Mr. Evans will begin his new job with Durham Region on December 1 at a starting salary of $53,000 per year in addition to a generous fringe benefit package. Mr. Evans, a professional engineer has worked for the last 20 years with the city of Sault Ste. Marie, including seven years in the engineer- ing department, and the last 13 as chief administrator for the city. In making the announce- ment of his appointment, Durham chairman Walter Beach described Mr. Evans as a"low key and very dedicated kind of indivi- dual." _ "Following the resignation of Mr. Richardson earlier this summer, Durham placed ads in the major newspapers and received 53 - applications, including - several from within the'® Region itself. ~ The Region's management committee of council, along with committee chairmen of all the other standing committees = of council PY conducted interviews with eight candidates, and three of these were called for a final interview held Septem- ber 18. In addition to the salary, the benefit package includes a car allowance, four weeks vacation, legal and real estate fees for selling his present home and buying a new one in Durham Region, as well as moving and relo- cation costs. The choice appears to be a » popular one among Regional councillors. Oshawa council lor Ed Kolodzie, never one to mince words on any subject, told reporters after the meet- ing last week that Mr. Evans is "an excellent choice." --="Durham-Region=is=very -- - fortunate to get this man for the job," said Kolodzie.
