German Shepherd pet Tawna was shot and killed by a high-powered rifle while playing on the front lawn of their farm house near Nes- tleton. ""We just have no idea why this happened," a distraught Mrs. Bond told the Star on Monday norning. "We have no enemies. We have never had a complaint _ about our dogs in the two years we've lived at the farm. We are very nervous about this incident and so are our neighbours," she said. Mrs. Bond said the shoot- ing took place about 10:30 last Friday morning. "When I came back out about ten minutes later Tawna was lying dead on the porch, and August was try- ing to drag her into the house," said Mrs. Bond. The dog had been shot in the hind leg by a high-power- ed rifle. An autopsy per- formed by a Port Perry veterinarian confirmed that the dog died almost immediately from shock and that the wound was caused by a high-powered rifle, said Mrs. Bond. The shot apparently took place during the time Mrs. Bond was in the house answering the phone, but Mrs. Bond says she heard no gunfire during that time. Mrs. Bond said she sus- pects that the gunfire came from either Concession 7 which is about one-quarter mile from the house or from corn fields which are on both sides of the farm, but she is not certain. If the shot came from the Concession Road, it means that the line of fire was directly at the house, and that thought has Mrs. Bond and her neighbours very nervous. Mrs. Bond described Tawna as being very well trained, obedient and good with children. The dog was a second place finisher out of 150 competitors at a show recently in Ottawa. "We just can't understand this," said Mrs. Bond. It was cold-blooded mur- der. There just is no other way to describe it," she said.
