McClelland The Stouffville Clippers scored three times in the' final five minutes to salvage a 6-6 tie with the Port Perry MoJacks in Junior C action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. It was the second Sunday night home game in a row that the MoJacks sagged badly in the final period against the Clippers, how- ever, in this one, MoJacks played well enough to win. After spotting Clippers two early goals, MoJacks settled down to a strong fore- checking and skating game and by the 15 minute mark of the final frame were leading by a comfortable 6-3 margin. But Clippers are an explos- ive team who can score their goals in bunches and at 15:20 one behind Merle Schewage in the Port Perry net to narrow the gap to two goals. With 1:32 left, Jim Chilvers brought the Clippers to within one goal as he found the range through a traffic jam of players in front of Schewaga. With just over a minute left, Clippers yanked goalie Scott Lippett for an extra attacker, and - began to apply intense pressure in the Port Perry zone. : .Defenseman Mike Albrecht took an interfer- ence penalty with 36 seconds left in the game, and although MoJacks managed to win several face-offs and clear the puck, each time the shot missed the open Clipper net and the play was called back for icing. Finally, with 23 seconds remaining, Clippers took advantage of the two extra attackers and Ted Waite tied the score at six each from a wild scramble in front of Schewaga. It was a disappointing weekend for the MoJacks who also lost a 6-4 match in ES A eR i with Danny Millar | Sd a Lakefield on Friday evening. The team now has three wins _ and two ties to go with five losses. Clippers opened the scoring in the first on goals by Chilvers and Dave Green- away, before Dave Alexan- der got MoJacks on the board late in the period when he fooled the goalie with a 25 foot screened shot. A minute later Bob Horton tied -the game-at two each when he scored on a back- hand from the left side with the Clipper defender draped around him. MoJacks took the lead at 1:39 of the second on a disputed goal that was event- ually credited to Al Lewko. The puck was bouncing near the Clipper crease and apparently went over the line before the goalie could put his hand on it. 'At 8:26, MoJacks went ahead 4-2 when Brian Nichol- son scored a short-handed goal with Peter Griffiths off for tripping. Nicholson rifled a hard slap shot that Lippett partially blocked before it trickled behind him into the net. . Rob Garrow made it 5-2 at 12:09 of the second oh a good individual effort, beating a' Clipper defender at the blue line to break in alone on Lippett who had no chance on the hard shot. Clippers pesky Kevin Bart- ley made it 5-3 when he beat Schewaga cleanly on a breakaway at the 13 minute mark of the second, and the score stayed that way until Brian Nicholson put MoJacks up by three goals at 11:16 of the third after Mike Tobin and Peter Griffiths put on a fine display of fore- checking deep in the Stouff- ville end of the rink. The three goals seemed to be a comfortable lead, but Eagles with game time at 7:30. The previous Sunday, the Clippers staged their late - rally to salvage the single point. Although MoJacks played, well enough to win the game, the team is still subject to severe let-downs at times when everyone seems to stop checking and skating. On Sunday night, the let-down came with less than five minutes left in the game. It cost the team three goals and a victory. Despite the six goals, Schawaga had a steady game in the nets and made some truly remarkable saves to keep his team in the game. Up until the last five a y evening to the Bowmanville minutes, the MoJack defense had been playing tight hockey, getting the puck out of the Port Perry zone. Another bright note for the MoJacks was the play of Doug Potts who is getting stronger every game. He is # a smooth deceptive skater, has good puck sense and is a good checker. ~MoJacks have a tough weekend ahead of them when Bowmanville Eagles visit the Scugog Arena for a Saturday evening game with face-off at 7:30. This Sunday night, the MoJacks will meet the Eagles in Bowmanville.
