The key to the Midget contest was Uxbridge's ability to bring quality players off the bench. Port also encountered problems in the height area, where Harry Sillen is the only effective big man they've got. _ Sillen was one of the Port Perry starters, and he was one of the top players on the floor. The Rebs held the upper hand while both teams had their best players on the court but once they went to the bullpen, the Tigers got strong relief and Port didn't; that was where the game was decided. The match got off to a quick start with both sides playing a man to man defence. Mark Goreski controlled more than his share of rebounds at both ends of the gym while Dave Anderson played a strong defensive game for Uxbridge. Anderson reject- ed successive shots by. Gore-. ski and Jamie Lane at one point in the first quarter. The Tigers ran into foul trouble early as Port made three of six free throws in the first four minutes of play. Port was leading 7-2 with four minutes left in the open- ing frame, at which point Port Perry coach John Rod- way sent in five substitutes. The Rebs turned the ball over three straight times before the end of the period, and Uxbridge held an 18-9 lead after eight minutes of quick paced action. Port sent its starters back in again in the second quart- er and they held their own against the taller, quicker visitors. But they began missing shots, especially from Lane and Goreski and Uxbridge's defence came up with an astounding five blocked shots as they went ahead 24-16 at half time. Port left its second string- ers on most of the third quarter and they practically got blown off the court as Uxbridge surged ahead 40- 18. If nothing else, they picked up needed playing experience under the gun. The smaller players off the bench put up what must be characterized as a game but outgunned struggle. Port's Juniors made their first home court appearance of the year fresh from a tournament win in Ajax the previous weekend. They looked like the team to beat as far as Port Perry. It is Burnett's first season of high school cage action and he decided to forego the opportunity to. play for the midgets. He is the fourth excellent guard that RH Cornish Public School has turned out in the past five years, following . Bob Ireland, Wilbur and Donny Young last season. Burnett looked shaky a couple of times as Port Perry went into its offensive formations in the early going™ but they could be shrugged off as rookie mistakes. Port started with a 2-1-2 zone defence and had a couple of problems as they switched to a press, with Wilbur and Burnett picking up fouls the first two times they applied it. The Rebels held an 114 advantage at the end of the first quarter but improved to a near flawless all round game in the second quarter to take a commanding 28-11 ° lead. The Rebs went to their bench in the third quarter and came up with guard Pete Christie and forward Trevor Till, both of whom played well in their brief appear- ances. Port's bench strength was lessened without the services of Scott Wallace, who "suffered "a "slight neck injury earlier in the week in a hockey accident, after he - was cross-checked from behind. He is expected back in about a week. Forward Peter Stone also had an excellent game in the Red and White Rebels uniform, especially in the shooting and rebounding departments. . The Junior Rebels play in a tournament in Lindsay this Wednesday, December 3. They must be hoping history repeats itself as Port's senior entry won two games without a loss there two years ago. Action under the Rebel net involved Jamie Lane [32] and Harry Sillen [33] waiting for a rebound. The Junior team was a little more fortunate and won its match easily.
