We. extend sincere congratulations on his election and a hearty welcome to the U.C.0O. Board of Directors.. Stuart is well known in the Blackstock area where he and wife Helen were born, started their family of four and were for years in a family partnership with his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Dorrell. The Dorrell's currently operate an eight hundred acre cow-calf operations in New Liskeard where Stuart is active in community affairs and has been a delegate of the New Liskeard Coop for the past six years. Stuart will have the distinction of serving the largest geographic Coop area of Ontario. All northern Ontario, stretching from Thunder Bay to Algonquin Park. Mr. and Mrs. Marti Malcolm spent the weekend in Toronto with friends enjoying the Grey Cup festi- vities. From the shellacking the Eskimos handed out the Hamilton Tiger Cats and transformed them into a batch of pussy cats, it would appear that the Alberta shuks" had already affected an energy crunch on their Ontario counterparts leaving them powerless. Mr. and Mrs. Oram Moore, David and Lynn were Sunday visitors with Maureen's mother, Mrs. English of R.R. Lindsay to observe Maureen's birthday and other family obser- vations. Miss Lana Malcolm contri- buted to the LE. Weldon Antics program with vocal guitar selections. Also on the program with the musical band were Jennifer and Carolyn Kennington enter- taining those present. Two carloads of Lindsay area U.C.0. Branch delegates and Mgr. Ben Haachi attended the annual Zone 3 meeting in Toronto on November 20th. Chairman Jim Nesbitt presented the Branch's, report at the meeting. Arash of thefts have taken place in the area recently. Mr. George McCullough had the misfortuné recently to have all the wheels and tires stolen off his car where he had left it parked while working on the night shift in General Motors. Mr. and Mrs.-Bert- McMullin of R:R.- Janetville also had an intru- der enter their residence and carry off a number of valu- ables, during their brief absence to town. Congratulations to all the successful candidates in the recent municipal election and condolensces to the losers. However, we do feel that some of the unsuccess- ful candidates were victims of their own presumption to offer ones services, as mayor, reeve or deputy- reeve, without first having some municipal experience as councillor appears some- what fool-hearty in our unsolicited opinion. It's like applying to enter University without having gone to elementary school. To carry out our convic- tions a step even further, as if anyone gives two hoots, we believe it should be manda- tory that every candidate for MPP or MP should have municipal experience. Too many of our elected repre- sentatives do not possess the grass root orientation that they so sadly require. We recall testimony to one Federal MP (not from Ontario, - Durham or Vic- toria) who didn't have a clue as to the municipal structure of counties and townships, who was attempting to represent his area, blind- folded as it were. It takes more than dedication and supporters in one specific field of endeavour to qualify for a capable leadership role. Experience with its humbling effect, can still be a pretty effective teacher. A special musical treat was in store for those in attendance at Yelverton morning's church service when "The Just Four' ladies quartette of Scarborough favoured the charge with their attendance and provided several enjoyable numbers. The ladies were Mrs. Thelma Bamber, Mrs. Joan Lennox, Mrs. Lorina Sinclair and Mrs. Joyce 'Wood. Unfortunately the Ladies and the congregation met with a cool reception as the caretaker for the month was a little tardy in getting the home fires (or at least the church furnace) burning. Guess who the culprit was? PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., December 3, 1980 -- 31° News from Yelverton area Rev. Art Rodgers provided a real hard hitting sermon - on "The New Morality or Old Morality'. A strong position in stark contrast to the pussy-footing of the Church Fathers at the higher echelon who favour. Mrs. Audrie Brown is currently entertaining her octoginarian brother-in-law Mr. Boyd McFarland, of Montreal. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Malcolm attended the annual meeting, dinner and dance of Picton branch of U.C.O. at Elk Lodge Picton on Friday evening. A pleas- ant evening was enjoyed by those present. Mr. and Mrs. Marti Malcolm entertained Jane's parents Mr. and Mrs. Peter Connolly of Bobcaygeon this week on the occasion of their 28th wedding anniversary. Also in attendance was Mrs. Connolly's mother, Mrs. Austin of Lindsay. Congratulations to Mr. Norman Wilson and twin daughters Anne Hurren and Norma Beggs who observed their mutual birthdays on Sunday, November 16th. Mr. Ross Hurren is currently spending a few days in a Toronto hospital undergoing tests. Ross was pleasantly surprised to have a number of fellow work- ers at General Motors drop in to see him and wish him "improved health. r High School News by Leanne Doupe Port Perry High School had a busy week to finish off November. On Monday the 24th, the RCMP band came to play for the students; the performance was enjoyed by all. During Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the button machine proved to be a booming success. Brigitte spent hours in front of the office making button after button after button..., you get the idea. They were on sale for a fantastic price of 50 cents per button. Port High experienced their first snow day of the year on Tuesday, the 25th. Because there was a delay for the buses, our home- rooms were held at 10:10 instead of 8:50, to allow late students to hear the morning announcements. Every night last week a group of students worked furiously in order to get the Christmas float ready for Saturday's Santa Claus Parade. The students did a" great job and after a very late Friday night the float was ready to roll on Satur- day. Thursday was an exciting day for some and a dooms- day for others because we received our first term report cards. Classes were dismissed at 3:10 and stud- ents picked up their reports from their homeroom teachers. The grade 13's applying for university made plenty of visits to the guidance depart- ment last week rushing to get their applications filled out for Monday, the deadline date. The "At Home' meetings are coming along well; how- ever, Ilka and Marisa would appreciate a little more support from the student body as there is lots to do. The theme this year is a Tropical Paradise. The walls around P.P.H.S. have been plastered with posters advertising the '81 yearbook. The yearbook staff has decided to give a pizza party to the class with the highest yearbook sales. The halls in the area of Room 110 were drafty during the past week due to the fact that the Texas oranges and grapefruits arrived and had to be stored in a cool place. The cool place was Room 110 with all the windows wide open. People drifted in and out during the week, picking up their orders. Mr. Sims, the director of "Shadow of a Glen" has chosen his cast after a long try-out session. The cast is as follows: Dave Van Weston, Ed Canning, Claudia Liebscher, and Mike Stokes. We wish the cast all the best of luck in their competition in the drama festival in March. The LOSSA finals were held in Oshawa on Saturday. Port Perry High sent two girls' basketball teams down to compete. The Midget girls qualified for the semi-finals but after a hard fight lost to Dwyer. Pickering had the upper hand on the Senior girls. The P.P.H.S. girls came from behind, but couldn't get ahiead of their opponents. The game ended with a score of 63-58 for Pickering. That ends another exciting and busy month at P.P.H.S. Stay tuned for more news next week.
