The Group in charge was Mary Jean Till, Jean Rodd and Gail Denby. The theme for the Devotional was _"Remem- brance". At the close of the Worship, everyone partici- pated in a short "sing-song"' of lovely old hymns. Marie Cookman assisted at the piano. President Elma Roundell, conducted the Business. Eunice Rahm read the minutes and Velma Foster gave the Treasurer's Report. A letter was read from Port Perry Hospital Auxiliary, telling of the -Hospital Christmas Bake Sale at the Hospital on December 12th, at 1:30 p.m. Any baking donations would be appreciated. A motion was passed that we send $20.00 donations to each of the following: Chris- tian Blind Mission, Street Haven, Victor Home for Girls, Fred Victor Mission, John Milton Society, C.N.L.B. Elma thanked everyone for helping at the Bazaar. Helen Thomson gave the Bazaar financial report, 'Handicraft Guild by Jo Dowson On Wednesday, November 12th the regular meeting of the Louise Patterson Guild was held in St. Johns Church Hall. After roll call, Christine Orlob introduced Joan Harper who had come to display and demonstrate the making of draped dolls. These are constructed from cardboard cones, styro- foam shapes, glue, lacquer and cotton or velvet fabric. Some are mounted on music boxes, others on wooden bases and all are a delight to showing that it was quite successful. We are to cater to the United Breeders' Luncheon, in early December in the Hall. Our Christmas meeting is to start with a Pot Luck Lunch at noon. All ladies are invited, and special invita- tions are to be sent to new ladies of the community. Helen McKean gave the slate of officers for 1981, which is as follows: Past President - Elma Roundell; President - Helen Thomson; Vice President - Mary Jean Till; Secretary - Barbara Ward) Ass't Secretary - Eunice Rahm; Treasurer - Marie Foster; Corr. Sec. - Velma Foster; Press Scugog Island W.I. by Clara Dowson On November 19th, the Scugog Island Women's Institute met at the Com- munity Hall with 25 members present. The president Janis Richardson welcomed everyone and the meeting opened in the usual way by singing the opening Ode and repeating the Institute Creed. Roll Call was answered by the eye. The display created much interest and many questions from those present. At the conclusion of the demonstration, the regular business was conducted. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 10th at 12 noon and is to be our Annual Christmas Pot Luck Lun- cheon and gift exchange. . We look forward to seeing all members, each bearing food and a hand crafted gift to exchange with a fellow handicrafter. OBITUARY RUSSELL STANLEY COCHRANE A highly respected and well known citizen of the area, Russell Stanley Cochrane, passed away at Port Perry Community Hospital on Sunday, Novem- ber 9th, 1980, following a prolonged illness. He was in his 77th year. Son of the late George and "Mary Cochrane; he was born in Darlington Township, and educated at Enfield Public School. He was married to the late Mabel Abbot and is survived by his second wife Ruby Moore. A lifelong resident of R.R.2 Blackstock, he was widely known for his knowledge as a showman of horses, which he showed at fairs and competi- tions for over 50 years. He was affiliated with Enniskillen United Church, a former member of the Commercial Horse Associat- ion and had retired from farming. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Ruby, children Glen, Whitby; Earl, Peter- borough; Bernice Saraka, Mississauga; Lorna Davey, Oshawa; grandchildren, Bryan Saraka, Alan, Karen and Janet, Jennifer and Blair Cochrane and a brother Ivan of Blackstock. He was predeceased by brother Morley, Harold, Milton, Walter, Lloyd, Garnet, and Leslie and sist- ers Hazel, Mrs. George . Stinson; and Verna, Mrs. Henry Adams. Funeral services were held at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral -Home on Wednes- day, with the Rev. Larry Johnson, Kawartha Baptist 'Temple, Peterborough, and the Rev. Harold Kempling, Enniskillen United Church officiating. Pallbearers were Messrs. Glenn Johnston, Murray Heath, Gordon Lewis, Bert Holmes, Dick Watkins and Floyd Lloyd. Among the many beautiful floral tokens received in his memory were offerings from Commercial Horse Friends, Ontario Belgian Horse Asso- ciation, Switch Gear and Ordinace Depts. C.G.E., Peterborough, Duffering Construction, Strike and Strike, Peterborough Exhi- bition Board, Oshawa Federal Liberal Association and Enfield neighbours. Interment Hampton Cemetery. The scholarship awards committee had given out the awards which this year was given to Ann Louise Haigh, and this being the first year to award a boy, which was given to Greg Fedyk. Alva Thompson reported on the crewel embroidery course, presented to a class of 20 by Alva. and Eva" Marcado as leaders. Don't forget girls summary day in February. : Madeline Cawker reported on the district directors meeting held in Brooklin. Jan Gerrow reported on the Hospital meeting held recently at the Latcham Centre. Donations were given to Operation Scugog and also to the Hall Board towards. the paint for the Community Hall. Alva Thompson gave a full report on the findings she got front the annual convention held at the Royal York Hotel in-Toronto. Thanks Alva. Janis Richardson then introduced the guest speaker Lewis Presner for marketing and advertising. He gave many interesting views on gift giving and Christmas shopping. It's not always the cost of a gift that counts nor a gift we think we want as to one we perhaps need. You don't need to spend a small ~ fortune to be a good parent, "wife or husband. It's the thought that really counts. Helen Redman presented him with a small gift of appreciation. 'Now came the highlight of the evening. Our Christmas gift exchange of hand made gifts. Each and everyone seemed extremely pleased. with their gift, which were: creative and varied. Just goes to show what one can do. Lunch was served by group in charge with pump- kin pie and hot mince pies whipped cream, and ice cream, tea and coffee. And punch was served through- out the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Magill celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on September éth, 1980 with Open House at the Masonic Temple in Lindsay. Epsom - Utica U.C.W. by Marion Harper The November meeting was held at Utica Church with Group 3 in charge. Eileen Slute opened the wor- ship service on Remem- brance with the singing of hymn 662. O God Our Help In Ages Past which was follow- . ed with a prayer. Scripture reading was read by Shirley Baster. Meditation The Bond of Peace, was read by Eileen followed by singing of hymn 378 Rise Up O Men of God. The closing prayer was read by Marion Harper. The program consisted of poems, Gateway of Remem- brance, In Flander's Fields, and The Poppies Speak. Shirley Baster gave an inter- esting talk on Alcoholic and Drugs among our native Indians, which is the mission "project which we have -- decided to adopt. The business was conduct- ed by Stella Asling. As well as sending money for our project it was decided to support Fred Victor Mission. Victor Home for Girls, Relief and Welfare and a White Gift Family. Roll call was an- swered by 15 members. Minutes were read and approved. Treasurer's report approved. Discussion followed re wedding in Janu- ary which we were asked to cater and Jean Jeffery to look after this. Offering was taken and dedicated. Vote was taken to give Minister a Christmas gift. Election of officers for 1981: President Vera Brown; Vice President Shirley Baster; Secretary Lil Lindsay; Treasurer Alice Ross; Social Committee is Marion Harper, Nancy Skelding, Elizabeth Taylor and Jenny Watson. Jenny Watson was also appointed as visiting committee for Epsom area. Next meeting will be at Epsom Church Dec. 9th. Hospital Auxiliary by Luella Graham The Port Perry Community hospital Ladies Auxiliary held their annual meeting November 17th in the cafeteria of the hospital with an attendance of 22 ladies and one visitor. The President opened the meeting with the auxiliary prayer. The secretary read the minutes of the last meet- ing. All officers gave their reports and the past year had been bery busy and profitable. -Up-until-the-time-of - the - meeting, 172 babies had been born in the hospital in the past year. Eleanor Davidson report- ed from the hospital board, regarding the Health meet- ing held in the Latcham Centre where they had a packed house, and most int- erested crowd. Mr. Brown spoke to us- regarding the meeting, and ° also answered some questions for us. * Our next meeting will be held Dec. 15th and all ladies are asked to bring a gift suitable for Christmas for the Tuck Shop. Also more active volunteers are needed in the hospital. The auxil- iary would appreciate any- one who could help. The nominating commit- tee then took over and the ~~ slate of officers presented for the year 1980-81. A delicious lunch was served by Marie Chute and Ann Cornish.
