And he is right. Figures in the report indicate that the average household including Port Perry now pays $38.82 quarterly for water and sewer charges. If the recom- increases are approved by council, that figure will go up to $45.97, which will mean an extra $32 a year. On top of that, the report recommends that the rates in 1983 go up an addi- tional seven per cent. ~ Part of the reason for the steep hikes in water and sewer rates is the proposed reduction in lot levies, and the fact that revenue from residential development in Durham in 1980 is about half what had been anticipated. The proposed motion was the objection of strong criti- cism from parents from several communities in Durham Region, and about 75 people attended the Board meeting last week prepared to argue against the idea. Although the motion died without the required second- er, some of the garents present were permitted to speak and they argued that having five-year olds attend class all day would be too hard on the kids, leaving them tired, frustrated and irritable. Trustee Carter said she proposed the motion to clear the books of a motion ap- proved last April that would have a pilot project for full day alternative Kindergar- Good news travels fast!
