Port Perry played their first game at 10:45 a.m. against Powassan and the boys were charged up for this one. Port Perry proved much too strong for their hammering opposition, Powassan 13-1. The boys finished off the game almost as fresh as they started and never quit work- ing'in spite of their big lead" Perry opened the scoring in the first period on Port a three-way passing play, Jamie Menzies to Daryl Leatherdale to Steven Connors who found the opening. Port just missed scoring again, the Powassan stole the puck and got their only goal of the game. Malmont took a two-goal lead when the Powassan goalie fell asleep on a Port power play. Steven Connors, assisted by John Lally slipped it by to make it 3-1 at the end of the first. The three stars of the game were John Lally, Steven Connors, and Jason Granbarger, from Powassan who put in a strong game ina losing cause. Second Game Port Perry's second game was not until 5:00 p.m. against Gravenhurst. Mal- mont came out the victors of a game in which they lacked the discipline and sparkle of their first. The final score was 5-3. Brad Menzies opened the scoring in the first period with an unassisted effort. Jamie Menzies was slashed by the Gravenhurst goalie of 4:42. Port Perry was award- ed a penalty shot and Gravenhurst got a two minute penalty. Geer took the shot and just missed. This perked up Gravenhurst; they success- fully killed the penalty and came back and tied it up. This seemed to panic Port Perry and for the remainder of the game they scrambled, forgetting team play and wearing themselves out. Robbie Brown gave Mal- mont the lead on an unassist- ed effort at 8:06 of the second. Scott Feasby then got one, assisted by Steven Connors, giving Port Perry a 3-1 lead. Gravenhurst got a goal in the third to make it close, but Robbie Brown turned on the burners and gave them some breathing space on a goal assisted by Mark Barkey. Thirty-three seconds later Robbie Brown , and Brad Legionaires drop Bowmanville 8-3 by Carol Wilbur On Saturday, Jan. 3 the Port Perry Legionaires travelled to Bowmanville where they skated to an 8-3 win. Port Perry got three unanswered goals in the second, John Lally from Robbie Jamieson, Mark Barkey from Scott Feasby, and Robbie Brown. from Mark Barkey. At 7:39 of the third period Daryl Leather- dale put Port solidly in the lead 4-1 on a pass from Jamie Menzies. Parry Sound made it 4-2 at the 6:23 mark but Port Perry came back with two more; Brad Menzies from Robbie Jamie- son and Warren Geer unassisted. John Lally and Mark Barkey were Port's stars of the game. Mention must be made of the defense which made the difference in the last two games, along with the solid goaltending of Stacey Ball- ingall. Each of the Port Perry team players was presented with a trophy and championship crest for their winning effort in the tourney. So far the Malmont Farm Atom team has taken part in three tournaments, taking the championship in two and losing out in the final game in the third. z ve NS I This scene was typical of the action in the later the dying minutes but two goals were not quite enough stages of the MoJack game Sunday against the Lakefield Chiefs. MoJacks applied great pressure in MolJacks drop close game to Lakefield by John B. McClelland It took the Port Perry MoJacks almost 55 minutes to wake up to the fact they were playing a hockey game Sunday night, but despite a last minute flourishrand-two--blue line -and-broke down-ice goals late in the game, MoJacks lost to Lakefield Chiefs by a score of 5-4. The loss was a tough one for the MoJacks; coming on the heels of a sluggish performance the day before against last place Little Britain which wound up in a 7-7 tie. The MoJacks, who have been working harder in their recent games, were hoping for a four point week- end, but could only manage a single point. The loss Sunday leaves the team in ninth place. Al- though they are just a couple of points behind Lindsay, MoJacks face a tough schedule over the next ten days, with games against Cobourg and Bowmanville. Against the Chiefs, the MoJacks got off on the right foot when Doug Potts notch- ed a shorthanded goal early in the first period with Dave Canning off for high- sticking. - Todd Wilbur trapped a loose puck inside his own with Potts against a lone Chief defender. Wilbur slipped a perfect pass in front to Potts who flipped it "past Lakefield goalie Tony Harris. But the Chiefs went ahead for good with two goals in nine seconds.at 5:55 and 6:04 of the first. John Munroe let fly with what looked like a harmless shot from the right side. Goalie Ray Gibson stabbed at it with his glove and knocked it into the net. Glenn Stevenson found the range nine seconds later with a quick shot from the left side along the ice. Chiefs took a 3-1 lead at 11:09 of the first when Wayne Batley scored on a screened shot with Gibson's vision blocked by a defender back- ing into the goal area. And late in the first with and the Chiefs came out on top 5-4. Port Perry having all kinds of trouble clearing the puck from their own end, Ron Pearson gave the visitors a 4-1 lead with a goal off a wild scramble in front of Gibson, ~The first period score was indicative of the way the MoJacks played in the open- ing 20 minutes. After killing off a double minor to defenseman John Robertson in the opening minutes of the second period, Bryan Nicholson found the range for the MoJacks at 7:34 with a quick back hand after taking a centering pass from Pete Griffiths. Early in the third, Chiefs took a three goal lead when Rod Taylor flipped a back- hand to the short side, and the MoJacks had their backs to the wall. At 14:52, Pete Griffiths parked right in front of the Lakefield crease flipped home a back-hand off a pass from Canning who dug the puck out of the corner. That goal set the stage for a furious MoJack drive in the last five minutes, helped by two minor penalties to the Chiefs. Dave Horton scored to make it 5-4 at 17:17 on the power play when he zinged a shot from inside the blue line "that was under the cross bar before Chief goalie Harris could blink. In the final minute, the MoJacks had several excel- lent chances to tie the score, including one by Potts who walked in alone and missed the net, and a blistering drive from 20 feet off the stick of Canning which also sailed wide by a foot or so. The game was a chippy affair with both teams called on numerous occasions for infractions such as slashing, high sticking, and roughing, but the only skirmish came in the second when Dave Alexander and Gary Williams tangled beside the Chief net. Both got tossed from the game for their efforts, although no serious punches were thrown. (Turn to page 2 5) {I a ety LR a Rt SR Je PE Cog
