Tr a nn ERR as ge PE ho FIER a Pur ono Broomball Action by Danny Millar Utica Plow Jockeys gave C&B Livestock their tough- est test since defeating them earlier in the year when they held the first place Port Perry Broombal] Associat- ion team to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, January 4 in the last of the three games. C&B's tie, coupled with Blackstock's 3-0 victory over Larocque Electric, narrow- ed their lead over second place Blackstock to five points. Emmerson Insur- ance and Brian's Towing also played to a 141 draw. C&B played well enough to win but they faced perhaps the only team in the league that can ask them tough questions and demand tough answers. For over two periods, Utica clung toa lead provided by Phil Kenton before Mark Lee replied with a goal eight minutes before the end. Kenton's goal came when C&B defenceman Bill St. John was in the penalty box. He was left alone in front of goaler Keith Fraser and deposited a centering pass from Mike Molex in the first period. C&B started quickly, making inquiries of their "own, asking Utica goaltend- er Don Card to come up big several times in the first three minutes. He did, at that time, and later in the final minutes. It was a well timed return to form for the veteran Utica goaltender who had been shaky in a couple of previous contests. The second period was played on equal terms as both goaltenders performed strongly in a head to head battle that matched the two best at that profession, from the PPBA anyway. C&B gained control in the third frame after the tying goal as Lee and Bill Bridge had good chances in the clear. Bridge had been set up by defence- man Ken Jeffrey, who play- ed a'strong game. Kenton is a high scoring forward that the Jockeys have missed over the past month following his knee injury suffered in a collision with Bill Owen. He will be a key in Utica's bid to overtake Blackstock for second place. Blackstock showed good scoring depth in getting three goals from different scorers, set up by three different players. ~ Wayne McGuigan, Ron Short and Cordell Kuening did the damage against Larocque while Blackstock"s most productive duo of Kevin Ibbittson and Jim Bryant was silent. --McGuigan--completed--a- pass in the slot from Rick Alpe for Blackstock's open- ing goal at the 11:07 mark of the first period to open the game's scoring. They also spread the other two goals out, getting one each period. Short scored on a high backhand shot just before he was dumped by defenceman Harris McLure at 3:49 of the second period. The only other notable event of the frame was a ten minute bench misconduct issued to Larocque's Steve Robinson. Larocque's Rick Olaison went off for high sticking Alpe in front of the net and before he returned to the ice, Blackstock had notched its third goal with 6:10 left. Kuening scored it on a shot along the ice from inside the blue line. Alpe and Dave Gianninni, two of the league's most penalty prone players, squared off in a humorous shoving match with 1:34 left to play. Alpe threw an elbow at Giannini and then was pushed to the ice. Instead of retaliating, he just lay there while his aggressor shoved him twice more. Both ended up with a minor. Brian's Ken St. Armand scored on the very first shot that Emmerson goaler Rick Arsenault had to face and that was the only time they beat him all day, - despite having the better of the play. Armand almost had another goal late in the period but he was tripped up on a break- away. Emmerson tied it up on a well executed play that saw Lewis Patterson stop a clear- ing try along the boards, and then fired it in the direction of the net. Walter Kurhan made a diving deflection of it, with goalie Wayne Cox caught out of position. For the most part, the three games were played without the use of the horn which sounds at the end of the period. There were no problems except for the first time, when it caused a little confusion. The only time it worked was at the end of the Blackstock-Larocque confrontation. The same story! 'Bowmanville Eagles defeat MoJacks by Danny Millar Bowmanville Eagles showed a different team than they have in the past few seasons in their recent New Year's Day visit to Scugog Arena to play the Port Perry MoJacks. But the result was one local fans are accustom- ed to as Bowmanville doubl- ed the hosts 4-2. Gone from the Bowman- ville roster are the likes of ruffians Jerry Johnson and Garry Nemisz. They are not the physically intimidating bunch of axemen they were for the past two seasons but neither does the current crop resemble the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Instead, they put on a strong, usually clean forechecking display that was effective in the early stages at keeping Port bottled in its own end. 'Under the new system, Eagles kept at least two, and often all three, forwards deep in the Port Perry zone. The first Eagle's goal at 3:36 by Brent Clemens came about after some strong work along the boards. Jon Janack gave Bowman- ville a two goal edge late in the first period when he slid ~~the-puck-in-off goaltender Raymond Gibson's pad. Earlier, Gibson had accom- ATTENTION - SNOWMOBILERS Any snowmobiler interested in taking the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Snow- mobile Operators Safety Training Course and obtaining a Snow Vehicle Drivers Licence may do so by contacting Charles Harper. Janack set up Dana Peebles for a back hand deke less than five minutes into the second period to put the game out of reach for the visitors. Janack tipped the puck over to his teammate while he was falling. Just after Peebles scored Port Perry successfully kill- ed off a two player dis- advantage for 1:42. Bowmanville also turned this trick in the last half of the third period when they were shorthanded for a full two minutes. But Port did manage a pair of power play goals, by Bryan Nicholson in the third period, and by Todd Wilbur minutes later. Wilbur's was a neat one as he carried the puck in from the side boards and tucked it in an opening past Randy Defoy. In all, it was a pretty respectable effort for the MoJacks, as have all of their recent games. In the pre- ceeding contest they upset Uxbridge Bruins 5-2 as Wilbur collected a pair. They also looked good, though by no means 'out- --standing;-against-TLakefield and Lindsay in gaining a pair of ties. From left to right are coach Jorgen Sorensen, manager Ejler Schou and Verner Andersen of the Danish Ice Hockey Federation. The team returns home January 9. 5-1 victory for PeeWee B by Paul Van Camp On Saturday, Jan. 3 the George Stone Realtors Pee Wee B team hosted Oakwood and skated away with a 5-1 victory. Port started it off with just under five minutes to go in the first period when Boyd Vanderheul fired a backhander past the Oak- wood goaler after a pass from Brian Dean. Twenty seconds later Ron Brown found the net with the assist going to Joe Forder. With just over a minute left in the first Ron Brown scored his second on a rebound Blair Phillips and Bob Goble picked up the assists. The second period was a scoreless exciting one with good end to end hockey all Port players playing well. Chris Cookman started the third period off on a goal LE TT TT TT EH from outside the blueline after a nice wrist shot. Oakwood got their only marker on an error of the Port defence which was their only one of the game. As goalie Kevin Cearns played a great game between the pipes, Blair Phillips finished off the Port scoring after Mike "Mad" Johnson set him up nicely. We regret the loss of one of the Port goalies, Mark Kendall to a broken leg. We hope Mark has a quick recovery and long return. The next Port home game is Saturday Jan. 10 at 7:30 so come out and support the Realtors.
