18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., January 7, 1981 by Danny Millar Otonabee surprised power- ful Port Hope 5-2 to win the championship round of -the Port Perry Bantam Hockey Tournament while the hosts had to be satisfied with the consolation round, defeating Cobourg 6-3 in that final, after dropping the first game to Port Hope. Following Port Hope's 7-1 shellacking of Port Perry in the first game for both teams many onlookers figured they would roll over Otonabee. But Otonabee played a strong, skating positional game and got two goals from Neil Allen, including the winner, to take home the title. Tony Wakely started Port Hope fortunes in a positive way by scoring on a back- =v. hand at the 3:37 mark of the - first period after cutting in front of the Otonabee net. But Otonabee drew even before the end of the first frame when Dean Keating managed to knock in a third shot after Mike McDougall took a previous shot at goaler Andy Taylor. The teams also exchanged goals in the second period, -- meaning they-went-into-the last ten minutes of the championship deadlocked at 2-2. The sawoff lasted all of 11 seconds at which time Allen scored on a power play with a deke to his backhand to give Otonabee the lead. Port Hope had taken a bench penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct with 20 seconds left in the previous period. Allen broke through again 1:18 later with his second unassisted effort that gave Otonabee a two goal edge. Tim Keating scored a beauti- ful goal barely a minute later when he swept around the defence and slipped a shot in a small opening on the short side. The three goals proved insurmountable for Port Hope with just over seven minutes remaining. Otona- bee wrapped up the eight team tournament with that insurance marker. Port Hope's swift skating and passing team rolled to an easy 7-1 win over Port Perry in the first game for either side. As has so often happened this year, Port played an unenthusiastic contest in the absence of Coach Doug Scott. Manager Don Phinney took, his spot behind the bench. Shalla paced the visitors with three consecutive goals in the first two periods while Pat Roy chipped in a pair. By the completion of the initial session, Port Hope had built up a 3-0 lead on goals by Wakely, Roy, and Shalla. Shalla added the second period score to make it 4-0 with ten minutes to go. Ian Dickson set up Port Perry's lone goal at 1:23 of the second period when he found brother Mike along in front of the net and laid a perfect centering pass to him. Aside from that goal, the only bright spot for Port Perry was the work of defenceman Brian - Steven- son. Stevenson played one of his strongest games of the season from his rearguard position as he picked up the second assist on the Dickson goal and saved another one late inthe mismatch when he -- cleared a loose puck away from an open net after it hit the post. Port Perry gained a measure of revenge on Port Hope when they beat them 3-1 in a tournament in Ux- bridge Saturday, January 4. Port ultimately lost in the finals of that meet to Lake- field. Port defeated Uxbridge 6-3 on the strength of two Kevin Fergusson goals, and singles by Mike Dickson, Vaughan McKee, Dave Kemp and Darren Desautels. They looked infinitely more impressive in disposing of Cobourg in the consolation round as McKee led the way with a pair of goals. Coach Scott said he was satisfied with winning the consolation and thought his team had a *'good half of the last game." He also said they were "fairly sluggish" in the early going. Port goalie Paul Kingston looked sloppy on the first goal as Hickerson lobbed a slow wrist shot past him nine seconds after the opening face off, the first shot on goal for either team. Parker made it 2-0 at 7:57 when he was able to knock the puck in from a heavily congested slot area. Howard Lee converted a cross ice pass from Steve Lee and fired a slap shot in behind James Somerville in Novice by Don Steele On January 2, 1981, the Port Perry Pearce Auct- ioneers resumed league play hosting the team from Ajax. The boys added another victory to their record, defeating Ajax 7-0. Port scored only once in the first period, with Clair Cornish firing a high wrist shot into the top corner, unassisted. the Cobourg goal as Port came to life towards the end of the period. Port outscored Cobourg 2-1 in the second period as they skated off with a 3-3 tie. Quick goals by McKee, as he led a rush down ice, and Desautels on a shot that was partially blocked from Steve Lee, gave Port a short lived 3-2 lead before Parker scored to tie it. But the third period belonged to the hosting team as Paul Bateman replaced Kingston between the pipes. Mike Dickson completed a neat passing play that went from Steve Lee to Ray Meis- ner, scoring a shorthanded goal to regain the lead. Earlier, Stevenson went off for hooking. Jeff Johnstone also added a sharp looking goal, this one on a power play as he carried the puck in from the boards and lofted a backhander past Somerville. Late in the game Port ran into a pair of penalties to Bateman and Steve Lee, forcing them to confront a Cobourg power play two men - Otonabee win local Bantam Tournament short for 50 seconds. Cobourg removed Somer- ville at the same time the Lee penalty was called, with 3:06 so Port was outmanned by three skaters for exactly eight seconds. ° McKee scored an empty net goal on the kind of shot that turns coaches pre- maturely gray when he scored from his own blue line with a high back hand shot. Coach Scott said Port won the Uxbridge game by physically forechecking them in their own end. trounce Ajax 7-0 The Auctioneers added three more in the second period. Jarrett Harman found the mark from Scott Menzies and Michael Feasby. Then 18 seconds later, Jeff Mills scored assisted by Doug Adams. With 13 seconds remaining in the period Chris Legere moved up from his defensive position to score assisted by Jeff Mills. Port Perry added the final three in the third period on markers by Eric Grosvenor from Michael Butt, then Doug Adams knocked in a rebound, unassisted and finally with 10 seconds remaining, Clair Cornish netted his second of the night, assisted by Michael Feasby. Ryan LaRocca earned the shutout between the pipes for the Auctioneers. The coaches would like to thank the team for the shirts presented to them before the game.
