But it took over half the game for that to happen. Port had a multitude of excellent chances for the first 25 minutes but were stymied by Uxbridge goal- tender Darrel Horne. Port Perry finally took advantage of the breaks at 9:41 of the second period, just after they had missed a good chance. Tim Parker was stopped on a tip in attempt from Joe Williams directly in front of Horne but he gained control of the puck and fired it in from the side of the net to break open the tight checking match. Uxbridge also needed a break to score its only goal 2:53 from the end of the second period when a mix up between Port defenders Pat Taylor and Carl Durward behind their own net allowed the puck to come free to Mike McMillan all alone in front of Glenn Archibald for the easy goal. That was the only time the visitors man- aged to slip the puck past the sharp Port goaltender. Left wing Brian Mikkell- sen played a strong game for Port as he needed yet anoth- er break to score the winning goal before the end of the second period. - His initial shot hit the post but mom- ents later he retrieved it and was tripped from behind while making his first shot. Horne allowed him to take a third shot and the grinding type winger finally put it into an open net. The boys didn't have their usual spark that they have shown over the season. Scoring Port's only goal was Craig Menzies from Dave Burnett and Andy Sytsma. These two teams do battle again in Port on Friday, February 6 at 9:00 and return to Uxbridge on Sunday, February 8 at 4:00. mates Brad Hurst and Pat Johnson. Tim Thompson scored an insurance goal 12 seconds before the second period concluded on a power play. Moments earlier, linemate Brian Dickson hit the post on a snappy set up from Thompson. Defenceman Mike Andrews played one of his most solid games along the Port Perry rearguard. He blocked a shot on a three on one break during the second period that led to a rush down ice that finished with Parker's goal and handed out a pair of resounding checks. He labelled Jack Postma twice, once each in the second and third periods along the boards with text book hip checks. Had it not been for some more bad luck he would have opened the scoring in the first period but his long wrist shot missed a wide open net. Mikkellsen scored again 2:23 into the final session on a tip in off Hal Storry's slow shot right on the ice from the point, making it 4-1. Left winger Jim Kane added a later power play goal to finalize the scoring. Uxbridge defeats BantamB by Danny Millar Port Perry Canadian Tire Bantam B's may have lost more than just its first hockey game in opening playoff series against Uxbridge, Sunday February 1st. They might have lost the services. of wing Tony Kersten for a while. Late in the third period, Kersten was slammed heavily into the boards at the Uxbridge end of the rink. He lay motionless for a seem- ingly interminable length of time before finally being taken off the ice on a stretch- er. He was covered in blan- kets for about ten minutes and hardly twitched during that spell. He was taken away in an ambulance, with an apparent back injury. Kersten was hurt earlier in the year and his absence could jeopardize any chance Port had of taking this round, however slim they were. At times he plays an aggressive brand of hockey and at others is an oppor- tunistic goal getter. His injury occurred following Darren Cearn"s goal mid-way through the last frame. Cearns scored a little too late in the match to make a difference. Bill Monkman gave hosting Uxbridge a 4-1 lead earlier with an unassis- ted power play goal when he intercepted a clearing attempt inside the Port zone and cranked a wrist shot (Turn to Page 19) January 29. Uxbridge goalie looks behind for the puck after Port Perry Juvenile forward scored during the opening game of the best of five play-off Sunday night Impressive victory for Pacers at the Scugog Arena. The Port Juveniles had an easy time, breezing to a 5-1 victory. Dump Uxbridge 6-1 by Danny Millar Port Perry Menzies Pacers opened its best of five first round playoff series against Uxbridge with a very impressive 6-1 victory at Scugog Arena Thursday, Port Perry got its scoring from six different players, including newcomer Bob Horton. Horton joined the team for the playoffs after playing all season on the MoJacks blue line. He was utilized mainly at forward for the Pacers and picked up an assist as well. Horton played defence, right wing, and center during the game. He saw some duty on the high scoring line between right winger Scott Wallace, who had a strong game, and Jamie Lane, who also per- formed quite well. Lane was skating on the left flank in place of Darren McKenzie who was serving a suspen- sion. Horton took the place of center Paul Storrey, who is out with a broken collar- bone. Storrey's injury could be a costly one for the Pacers. He executed very well with Wallace and was a big factor in the winger's scoring success. However, Port has excel- lent depth at pivot with Kevin Long and John Vaz both able to play there as well. Horton's goal was the Pacers fourth. Mid-way through the final period he broke through on a one-on- one and beat goalkeeper Kevin 'Risebrough with a good wrist shot. Earlier, in the second period, Horton set up Lane in front of the Uxbridge net right after Lane had the netminder beaten cleanly with a deke but missed the net. Lane made no mistake the second time as he redi- rected the puck through Risebrough's legs to give Port a 3-0 lead. Brian Taylor put Uxbridge on the board in the first minute of the third period but the Pacers regained momentum afterwards and kept it until the end. They were aided by a shorthanded goal by Sean Fewer that left many fans in the crowds stunned. With Todd Blayone off for roughing, Fewer uncorked a hard slap shot from inside his own blue line. Uxbridge defenceman Larry Aitcheson tried to jump out of the way of the blast at his own line but it deflected off his midsection and dropped down past Risebrough. Port also got strong, though less dynamic, penal- ty killing from Wallace, especially during a second period slashing call against Fewer. Wallace killed off precious seconds by ragging the puck in his own zone. Clay Lovering tended goal for Port but was not severely tested. His second shutout bid against Uxbridge this season lasted 30 minutes and 17 seconds until Taylor ruin- edit. He blanked them 1-0 in the regular season. MolJacks close season lose 7-3 to Merchants by Danny Millar It was a pretty dismal way to end. In front of a sparse home town crowd, the Port Perry MoJacks closed out its Jr. C. Hockey season with a, 7-3 losing effort against Little Britain Merchants Saturday January 31. It was one of the quietest audiences at Scugog Arena during the past season. For the first two periods, a fun- eral atmosphere prevailed; it was an almost eerie silence. At least at a funeral there is one person speaking. The MoJacks played like it was their funeral during the final two games of the regu- lar season. They knew they had been eliminated from post-season play with a 10-2 whipping at the hands of Cobourg Cougars, so they took it easy against Stouff- ville Clippers, losing 7-1, and against the Merchants. First year forward Mike (Turn to Page 19) EE
