Port Perry Emiel's Place won the game and the open- ing playoff round with a thrilling 8-7 triumph. Thompson rifled in the winning shorthanded goal while captain Carl Durward was serving a penalty, breaking a 7-7 tie. He stole the puck from defenceman Franze Henke along the left wing boards and blasted a shot into the far side of the net past Horne. Port Perry took the best of five series in three straight games registering a 4-2 triumph earlier in the week. They now advance to play Lakefield. The game was tied seven different times and as the teams were never more than a goal apart, they treated the large Port Perry crowd to some wide open. end to end hockey. Jim Milroy led a gallant Uxbridge effort with three goals. His third goal came with 1:46 remaining on a slap shot that went in off goal- tender Ken Harman's shoulder into the top of the net, at that time tying the match 7-7 and setting the stage for what looked like certain overtime. Port went into the final period leading 5-4 but Milroy tied it 52 seconds after the opening face-off as Uxbridg kept the pressure 9n in Port's end right fron the initial draw. Just over a minute later Pat Johnson fed Joe Williams in front of Horne and the Port wing made no mistake in giving Port a lead that lasted 1:53 when Mike Parrott set up Dave Pearce with a backhand pass to tie it at 6-6. The final period was play- ed at a near lightning pace from start to finish and the large crowd cheered every occurrance. Port Perry partisans nearly raised the roof during the final frame and the Uxbridge contingent made its presence felt. There was even a group from as far away as Coquitlam, British Columbia, a high school band here on an exchange program. Right winger Doug Petts put the crowd on its feet at 10:43 when he drilled a slap shot that Horne stopped. But Potts kept breaking towards the net and pushed the rebound past the Uxbridge netminder. The visitors were two men short at the time as a result of a holding call against Brian Till and a minor penalty to Franz Henke. It was obvious that penal- ties played a key role, especially during the third period but the series was a relatively clean one. All of the penalties dished out to either team in the last g ame were minors and none were doubles. There was only one unsportsmanlike conduct called and that was against Uxbridge. Port scored three short-handed goals. The first period was a close checking one compar- ed to the other two as each team recorded one goal. Defenceman Brad Hurst got Port's tally at 1:22 and Mike McMillan scored from the front of the net on a power play 3:09 later. Brian Dick- son was off for elbowing at the time. Port Perry started goaltender Glenn Archibald but he was yanked in the second period after Milroy tied it at 3-3. So far, the Juvenile's post season play has started off the same way it did a year ago, with a win over Uxbridge. Ringette Juniors romp over Ajax by Pat Armstrong Saturday afternoon saw the Ives Florist sponsored Juniors beat Ajax by a 11-4 score. The good team-work used in this game helped assure the girls this win. Kelly Raines and Janice Jackman played a super game and both girls chalked up another hat trick to their name. Diane McDougall and Michelle Newell both put in 2 goals apiece while Julie Abraham slipped in 1. The assists were credited to Ally- son Mitchell, Julie Abraham, Jill Kendall, Diane McDougall and Michelle Newell. Congratulations once again to Lisa Canning. Saturday was Lisa's first time in net and she played a fantastic game. Sometimes because we are so busy counting our goals we forget to give due credit to our defensemen. Because the Juniors have such a small team this year the girls are asked to play posit- ions other than the ones they are best qualified for. But there are three girls who play most games in the defense end of the ice and do a terrific job. These girls being Tish Le Fort, Stepha- nie Butt and Lisa Canning. Thursday night sees the Ives Florist Juniors against Oshawa B and this should be a very competitive game. The Port Perry Juveniles nipped Uxbridge 8-7 Sunday night to sweep the play-off three games straight. Tim Thompson scored the winner late in the game, fooling netminder Darrel Horne with a quick slap shot to the corner. Play-off round robin series underway [See story.] Atom A's skate to win, tie by Val Menzies On Friday, Feb. 6 Port Perry Malmont Farm Atom All Stars opened their play- offs with a game against Bowmanville. The teams played to a 5-5 standoff. The game featured great two way play and super goal- tending at both ends. Port Perry opened the scoring in the first with a goal by Mark Barkey assisted by Brad Menzies, but only twenty-one seconds later Bowmanville tied it up, then scored again to take the lead. With two minutes left in the first period, Robbie Jamieson tied it with his first of three fine goals assisted by Brad MenfZies. In the second period, Port Perry jumped out in front with two more goals from Robbie Jamieson with Mark Barkey and Brad Traves assisting on the first and Mark Barkey and Brad Menzies on the second. This lead was short-lived however as Bowmanville picked up two goals on a power play. In the third period Port Perry pulled into the lead again with a goal from Robbie Brown from a perfect lead pass from Mike Sorley. Bowmanville came back again to tie it up on another power play to end the scoring at 5 all. The Port Perry team play- ed well and the boys were passing but penalties could hurt them in the play-offs. The penalty Killers cannot hold teams like Bowmanville off the scoresheet, playing a man short. Saturday Feb. 7, Port Perry travelled to Lindsay. Malmont came out with a 7-1 victory. Port had three penalties to Lindsay's six and no goals were scored while Port was short-hand- ed. Port Perry opened the scoring with a goal from Brad Menzies, assisted by Scott Feasby. Lindsay tied it up but Brad Menzies came right back with his second goal, this one unassisted. The Green Machine never looked back. Mark Barkey scored, assisted by John Lally and Brad Menzies, then Steven Connors got one from Andrew Steele and Brad Traves. In the third period Robbie Brown made it 5-1 with an unassisted goal, then Robbie fed Mike Sorley a lead pass and Mike scored. The last goal was scored by Robbie Jamieson assisted by Andrew Steele. The whole team played well, including Stacy Ballingall in the net, who is always there when he's needed, even in games when he doesn't see much action. This was probably one of the best passing games the boys have had this year. If they continue to play this way and eliminate foolish penalties, they have no worries in the play-offs. Their next game is Friday, Feb. 13, at 8:00 p.m. at home against Port Hope. Come out and support the boys in their play-offs and see some enter- taining hockey. Pee Wees going down to the wire by Carol Wilbur The series between the Legionaire Pee Wees and Uxbridge is still tied after 4 games. This brings the series to one final game on Friday, Feb. 13 at 9:00 in Port Perry. On Friday, Feb. 6, the Legionaires came out skating, they hustled to the puck first and came out the winners by a score of 7-2. Port scored four unanswered goals before Uxbridge could reply. Scoring for Port were Craig Menzies and Lee Wilbur with two goals and two assists each. Greg Warriner had one goal and one assist. Jimmy White tallied one goal. David Culbert, Chris Lane, Dave Burnett and John Harman each had one assist. John Moore made some good saves in net for Port. On Sunday, Feb. 8 back in Uxbridge, Port jumped into a 2 goal lead. Uxbridge came back and score four unanswered goals. Try as they might, the boys couldn't put the puck past the Uxbridge goalie, even though we out shot them 33-16. Scoring for Port were Craig Menzies, unassisted and Robbie Baker with assists going to Steve Durham, and John Harman. Come out and cheer on these young . men Friday, Feb. 13 at 9:00 in the Scugog Arena. Hockey. Support Minor
