ARE ESP The Marj Tripp Real Estate bonspiel was held on Friday, January 27 at the Port Perry Curling Club with a joint team from the Tam Heather and Bayview Curling Club emerging victorious. Doris Clark is seen here presenting the trophy to team members, from left, Patricia Burhham, Natalie Tonissoo, Dorothy Redpath and Barbara McAllister. Pacers hold lead in Midget series by Danny Millar Left winger Todd Menzies was left open in the slot and took a pass in from defence- man Kevin Trapp, slamming it home less than a minute in the overtime period for the winning goal as Port Perry Menzies Pacers beat Uxbridge 6-3 to take a commanding two game edge in the Midget C series, Mon- day, February 2, at Port Perry. Menzies's goal was the first of three markers the Pacers scored in the ten minute extra session. Bob Horton and John Vaz got the others as Port dominated easily. Pacer Coach Doug Scott had a short, to the point, answer when asked if he was surprised with his team's performance in over- time. "No", said the skipper of the team that could sweep Uxbridge with a win in its third confrontation, Tuesday February 10. Coach Scott felt the differ- ence in the fourth period was that Port managed to avoid penalties. "We stay out of the penalty box and we'll beat anybody" he stated emphatically. He also added that the "boys are in good shape." The most flagrant penalty taken by Port was defence- man Sean Fewer's ten minute misconduct late in the first period. Fewer attacked an Uxbridge skater after the Port rearguard felt he had been speared after the play. He ended up with an additional two minor penalties. The teams ended that hectic first period in a 1-1 deadlock. Ian Goldsmith gave Uxbridge the lead while Horton was sitting out a hooking penalty with just over five minutes remaining on a slap shot from the point. Forward Kevin Long tied it up while the teams were playing five aside on a rebound from Jamie Lane at point blank range. Port took a 3-1 lead into the third period on goals by Scott Wallace and Long. Wallace was playing a routine forecheck- ing assignment when the puck came free and he slipp- ed into an empty net. Horton did the legwork on Long's goal. He led the rush down the ice but was squeez- ed out of the play by an opposition defencemen. Long picked up the loose puck and deposited it past Risebrough. The Pacers broke down in its tight, man on man check- ing system and that allowed Uxbridge to get its tying goal to send the entertaining contest into overtime. Chip- py Brian Taylor, who cut Trapp's mouth late in the game in an incident behind the play, got past Horton at his own blue line and then raced in and beat goaltender Clay Lovering with a deke to his backhand. The OMHA agreement for this series spells. out a man- datory ten minute overtime in the event of a tie after the regulation 45 minutes. Menzies' tally stood as the winner but Port got insur- ance goals from Horton, during a scramble just over two minutes later, and Vaz rei y ; an a Ee Vay by Danny Millar Uxbridge forward Scott Harper scored two third period goals that allowed them to defeat Port Perry Beare Motors 5-2 to take the opening round of OMHC CC Bantam playoffs in a sur- prising four games, Wednes- day February 4 at Scugog Arena. The large and noisy crowd, which included a strong turn- out from Uxbridge, was stunned as the visitors came back from a 2-1 defecit on the strength of Harper's goals in the final 15 minutes. The Uxbridge partisans went into a frenzy when center Kevin Smith scored early in the frame to tie it and their fever pitch grew with Harper's markers. This was the same Bantam A club from Port that dis- patched Uxbridge easily in the opening round last winter and went onto victories over Oak Ridges and Lakefield before bowing out to Dresden in the all-Ontario final. That fact makes the defeat seem all the more crucial, especially when it is considered that the Bantam A's are the first Port Perry team to be eliminated this year in the annual rekindling of the Uxbridge-Port sports rivalry. The relative ease with which Smith and his team- mates skated off with the win made the series surprising. The only victory Port chalk- ed up was a 6-4 win in the third game, and even then Uxbridge staged a remark- able comeback after being down 5-0. The closest Port came in the other losses was two goals, when they dropp- ed the opener 3-1. Uxbridge took the series on its ability to nullify Port's big guns in close checking affairs. Defenceman Vaughan McKee, centers Jeff Johnstone and Steve Lee were kept silent until the third game. In essence Uxbridge beat Port at its own game--defensive hockey. Smith was a big gun for Uxbridge during the four matches. His play at centre prevented Port from keying on Shane Redshaw, who centered another big line. His tying goal in the last on a power play slap shot from the right wing with 2:10 remaining. * The Pacers could become the first team to beat out an opposing Uxbridge squad in straight sets when they return to Scugog Arena. If they win the round they will advance to either Lakefield or Bancroft. Last year, they went in the opposite direct- ion as they lost out to Schomberg. Wig TROPHIES! and | ENGRAVING DONO! Both the winning and tying goals were scored during power plays. Howard Lee was off when Smith slid a close shot past goaler Paul Bateman on a three on one break that McKee went.down on. Ian Dixon was sitting out an elbowing infraction when Harper got the eventual winner 2:17 from the end of the game when he stole the puck from Meisner as the Port defenceman was round- ing the net and starting a rush up ice. Harper added a second insurance goal with 1:15 left when he got past McKee, who dived at the swift Uxbridge puck carrier. Port Perry's hopes went down about two seconds after McKee did. Port finished the match with its top players on the ice. The Lees, David Kemp, Kevin Ferguson, and John- stone lasted out the fading seconds of the round as the Port Perry contingent pray- ed for a miracle that they knew wasn't coming. John- stone, obviously frustrated, got into a fight five seconds before the game ended. The loss wiped out excel lent efforts by left wing Ferguson and right winger Kemp who were in on both Port goals. Ferguson tied it 1-1 at 13:39 of the first period when he tipped in a centering pass from Kenny Brett Rushlow fed Redshaw as they beat Brian Stevenson at the Port blue line earlier in the same frame. Ferguson got his second goal following a Kemp set up on the tail end of a three on one rush at the :58 mark of the second period. His high wrist shot eluded Wayne Bogaert, who had performed strongly throughout the first two games. Port will loose practically all of its front line players through graduation for next season. McKee, Johnstone, the Lees, Fergusson, both goaltenders, and Kemp are a few that become Midget age. Still, Port should have a competitive team consider- ing the strength of the local Pee Wee teams, of which many players are in their second year. with ... TICKETS GOING FAST!
