Bridge's winning marker came in the first five-minute over time period, and as is the rule in over time, both clubs were without their goalies. Keith Fraser got the shut- out for C&B, going the dist- ance in regulation time with- out giving up a goal to the tough squad from Ottawa. There were 16 teams in the day long tournament with top flight competition coming from Sun Life, Pauleyanna, Wellington Rangers, and squads from the Port Perry broomball loop. In the consolation final, Oshawa Carlos blanked Tops Motel from Millbrook by a score of 2-0. Thanks to the organization and the play of the teams the tournament ran very smoothly and on time despite the pressure of 4 overtime games in the first round, 3 of which went into double over- time. But all was thought lost, as three minutes into the final game the lights went out over the ice due to a shorted outlet box in the timer's bench. Thanks to some running around by arena management and Jack Monsma power was restored and play was resumed. All six teams out of our league put on some fine performances throughout the day with probably the best coming from C&B Livestock who finally brought the Championship home to Port after an absence of 4 or 5 years. In their first game C&B pounded Fraserville of the Millbrook league by a 6-0 score. Goal scorers were Mark Lee from Tim Ash- bridge, Bill Bridge from Ashbridge, and finally Lee from Bill St. John. Their second game was a little tougher as they met Bea- cock's Hardware in a match that saw no scoring over the first 23 minutes of play. Then C&B struck for 3 goals within 4 minutes to win 3-0. Ashbridge from Bridge, Fraser from Evans, and Bridge from Bruce Woodrow did the damage. C&B's third game was against their favourite nemesis, the Wellington Hotel Rangers. It looked like Rangers were going to even their two year series at 3 games each as it took them just 35 seconds to pot their first goal, but C&B came storming back in the second as it took 17 seconds from the start of the period for Fraser to score from Bridge and one minute later Don Phinney netted the winner from Lee to put C&B in the finals. This was to be their tough- est challenge of the day as they came up against the speedy heads up team of Ottawa Sunlife. Both teams play quite a similar style and regulation time saw them tied at 0-0 as both goaltend- ers only faced 4 or 5 shots with play being mainly between the two bluelines. In the 5 minute, 4 aside overtime, it looked like it was going to stay tied as neither side had a real good chance of scoring on the empty net. As the period was about to draw to a close, Evans flipped a pass from deep in his own end to Bridge at center who sped down the ice to slip it in with 2 seconds on the clock. The final was 1-0 and C&B had the Championship game. The first game of the tournament saw Emmer- son's Insurance tie the Trenton Thrashers 0-0 in regulation time forcing the first game of overtime. At the end of the first overtime period it was again tied, this time 1-1 as Tom Gordon scored from Cam Cackatte for Emmerson's. Forcing a second period of overtime, this time is was sudden death for one or the other. Emmer- son's pulled off a little surprise as it took them two minutes before Charlie OFFICE SUPPLIES For all Your Requirements PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 Any 4 Items PIZZA BONANZA ona 12" Pizza Mon., Tues., & Wed. In their second game, Emmerson's faced a far superior Welling- ton Rangers team and ended up bowing out 4-0. This tournament saw the return of Bill Gerber between the pipes as Emmerson's regu- lar goaler, Rick Arsenault was playing for Carlo's of Oshawa. The next Port team to play was Beacock's Hardware ¢ against Oshawa's Carlo's. #As in the Emmerson's game this was tied after regulation time at 0-0 and required two periods of overtime. Both teams were missing a couple of players at this time of the day and Dave Dalton ended up playing in net for Black- stock. Keith Dalton from Wayne McGuigan and then from Ron Short got the two goals in the first overtime period. In the second over- time Wayne McGuigan from Dave Dalton gave Beacock's the win. As earlier stated Beacock's played C&B in their second game bowing out with a 3-0 loss. Right after the Beacock's game a surprisingly well disciplined Laroque's Electric gave last year's Regional Champs, Pauley- anna Sports a run for their money. At the end of the first Pauleyanna was lead- 2-0 but in the second Larocque outscored them 3-1 to force another overtime game. Here's where Pauley- anna showed their exper- ience in overtime over Larocque's as they scored just one to win the game 4-3. Goal scorers for Larocque were Steve McGregor from Kopie De Jong, Richard Honey from Kevin Martens, and Martens from Dave Canning. In their second game of the tour, Larocque's looked good in the first period against Top's Motel of Peterborough but in the second Top's pour- ed it on and put three past Tabby to put Larocque's out of the tour. The oldtimers of the league, Utica Farm Equip- ment scored a goal in each period of their first game to beat Top's Motel 2-0. They could've had a couple more but the Top's goalie stopped them on a few good chances. Goals were scored by Phil Kenton from Rick Collins, and Len McEnaney from Mike Mole. Coach Dennis Symes thoroughly enjoyed the next game as Utica went up against Pauleyanna coming out winners again on a2-1score. Pauleyanna took a 1-0 lead into the second period before Utica bore down and took the play the other way. A much improved, recently, Mike Mitchell, scored the first one from Jack Monsma and Monsma then set up the winner by Rick Collins. In the A semi-final Utica came up against Sun Life in a game of ball control. This game as so many others ended up going into overtime as the score was tied 2-2 after regulation time. Sun Life showed their prowess as they came out on top 4-2 to go to the finals. Two speedsters for Utica put them on the board as Len McEnaney RENT A NEW potted both goals from Aldon Smith. The last Port team to play in the first round was Brians. Towing who had the misfor- tune to play Sun Life. This was the 'most surprising team of the league as what should have been a white wash for Sun Life. For Sunlife, the score ended up being 3-0 against Brians. - Brian's got over the center red line to the Sun Life end just twice the whole game but thanks to some super goaltending by Wayne Cox and a little help from Frank Fielding's body, they kept the score respectable. Another standout for Brian's was Paul Christie who look- ed like he ran 15 miles in this game, chasing players all over. Their next game was a lot closer as they came up against All Canadian Awards of Oshawa. Oshawa scored mid way through the first to take the lead, and try as they might in the second Brian's couldn't get the equalizer and had to bow out MONTHLY WITHA GENEROUS PURCHASE OPTION!
