Residents of Scugog Island may have been slightly surprised last week to see eight sled dogs and driver mushing their way over one of the Concession Roads. No, it wasn't the ghost of Sgt. Preston or the Mad Trapper of Rat River, but a 17-year old visitor to Scugog from Ely, Minnesota, out for an early morning run to help keep his team of Alaskan Huskies in peak racing form. Stu McEntyre and his parents Irene and Roy spent .a few days last week visiting Roy's brother Rev. Stuart McEntyre of Port Perry. They are from the small community in Minnesota which is known as the "Sled Dog Capital of America." They were on their way from a racing competition in New York State to one in Wiscon- sin this week. To help keep the dogs in top shape, Stu harnessed them up to the racing sled for an early morning three mile jaunt on Scugog Island. Although sled dog racing is virutally non-existant in this part of Ontario, it is a fast-growing sport in the American mid-west and some of the most prestigious races offer participants up to $10,000 in prize money. Racing sled dogs is not a cheap hobby by any means.
