There is an expression which fits in many instances that at a funeral they don't just bury one person, but two. And after the initial shock of the loss of a spouse has worn off, all too often the widow or widower continues to experience times of extreme loneliness that can lead to withdrawl, depress- ion and ir some cases suicide. There is a group of widows and widowers in Scugog Township who have formed the Scugog Widowed Assoc- iation as a kind of self-help organization. Kathleen McBride, who lost her husband a little more than a year ago, was instru- mental in getting the organi- zation off the ground last November. In a recent interview she said the purpose of the Asso- ciation is to give "mutual Crisis Centre gets grants The Scugog & District Sexual Abuse (Rape) Crisis Centre has been in operation for almost two years now, dealing primarily with victims of sexual assault, rape, thild abuse, incest, child molestation, and wife- battering, and for the past year has been a member of the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres. Experience has indicated there is a very real need for the type of services provided by this centre - not only in the Scugog area, but in Uxbridge and Cartwright areas as well. Recognizing this need, the Centre recently made a successful application to Employment and Immigration Canada for funds to help cover some of the expenses involved in setting up an Outreach Program. The main goal of this. program is to establish liaisons with area hospitals, nurses, doctors, police, schools, and social service agencies, to better explain the ideas and experiences in dealing with victims. Public awareness and understanding is another important goal - not only in the area of preventative measures, but also in dealing with the problems and the trauma experienced by a victim of rape or sexual assault. A third important goal is to establish a volunteer coun- selling force made up of women from the Uxbridge and Cartwright areas. A 24-hour crisis line is presently being operated by trained volunteers from Port Perry and Centre staff members are readily avail- able for speaking engage- "ments, to answer-questions, or to provide further infor- mation "concerning the existing service as well as the Outreach Project. help, to discuss common problems associated with widowhood, and to organize social functions and outings for the members where they can feel comfortable and enjoy themselves. "Sometimes on days when someone is feeling particu- larly low, it's enough just to be able to phone one of the members, get together for a cup of coffee and have some- body to talk to who under- stands the kinds of problems we have," she said. There are about ten members in the Association at the moment and Mrs. McBride feels that there are many widows and widowers in the Scugog area who might like to join. The group meets once a month to plan such things as card parties, outings for problems or, concern. Surprisingly, the average age in Canada of a widow or widower is 56, and there are four times as many widows as there are widowers. Mrs. McBride says that losing one's spouse seems to present more immediate problems for women. They may need help with even areas of fix a leaky faucet: which throughout SIGNS 665.8048 David H. By the same token, widower may be completely lost in the kitchen, and know nothing about how to keep a house or apartment clean, or the cook even a simple meal. Mrs. McBride says that the group tries to discourage members from talking about their spouses "But if some- body feels the need to, there is somebody there who will listen and discuss the problems."
