Blackstock continued to press in the final moments and appeared momentarily when Wayne McGuigan scored. But it was waved off because of Steve Hawes batting the ball down with a high broom, which, unlike hockey, is a penalty in this sport. There was only slight argument from the Black- stock squad. Until that Jockey's net. Kevin Ibbitt- point, Utica had managed to clear the ball across center only one time in the final minute. Phil Kenton scored a desperately needed insur- ance goal nine seconds after Hawes took his spot in the penalty box. It came from directly in front of the net after Mike Mole centered a pass from the right wing boards. Utica was first fo get on the boards at 5:12 of the first period while Blackstock's Rick Alpe was serving an infraction. The Plow Jockeys swarm- ed over Blackstock for the remainder of the first session and Keith Ellicott made it 2-0 with 5:04 left on a hard shot that beat McLean from the right side. Blackstock held the edge in play during a scoreless second period as goaltender Don Card was forced to make a split save of a tough shot by Keith Dalton. Cordell Kuening saved a sure goal at the other end - later when he cleared the ball away while McLean was down and out of the play. This contest was more rugged than the preceeding one and there were a couple of minor scuffles. Harvey Parrinder became involved in a slight altercation early in the third period that amounted to nothing more than coincidental minors. The Port Perry Ladies broomball team returns to Scugog Arena at 4:00 P.M. this Sunday, March 1 when they take on Wayne's Angels of Oshawa. The two teams met earlier in the year with the Angels taking a 2-0 win. The Port Perry team played in front of a large, curious audience three weeks ago and earned a tie with Oshawa Thrifty's. The PPBA has introduced a Showdown mini-team format to fill in the extra ice time now that the playoffs are on. These contests last five minutes pitting four member teams against each other. The teams are com- piled from teams in the league, including those eliminated from the post- season. Mle Basin Bde AALIRO Gil rb by Danny Millar Port Perry Beare Motors Bantam A's played an exhibition game against Markham B's that proved one thing; at this time of the hockey season, most spectators are not interested in watching an exhibition match that doesn't mean much. They would rather be watching a playoff match. Port Perry took the listless contest 4-2. The fans in the Scugog Arena were fairly quiet most of the time and the action in front of them did little to stir their interest. There was at least one exciting play, a penalty shot by Markham. Port Perry goaltender Paul Kingston played it perfectly, PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 25, 1981 -- 15 Bantambeat Markham as he moved out to block the right side that Markham was aiming for. The shot missed the net. Kingston was replaced immediately after- ward by Paul Bateman, who played well. Port Perry suffered a surprisingly decisive set- back to Uxbridge in the opening round of OMHA playoffs, winning only one. game in four. This was its first start out of the gate since then, excluding a father and son match a week ago. Right wing David Kemp, one of the most improved Port players over the last half of the year, scored once and set up two other goals. Howard Lee, Steve Lee, and Jeff Johnstone got the other markers. Port Perry went into the third period up 4-1 after Kemp and Johnstone scored after the blocked penalty shot. Kemp's goal came on a rebound off a Johnstone shot and earlier he put a shot onto the lower right hand corner that was given to Johnstone. Markham had a goal in the last minute of the period that was disallowed when Steven Lee and Dan McCormick exchanged punches while the play was still going on. Gregg Lobb scored the only goal of the last period while Port was using a defence pairing of Kemp and Kevin Ferguson, both of whom normally play forward. | ATTEND JOHN DEERE FARMING FRONTIERS 1981 Don't miss the year's most exciting farm film program to be shown here.
