Port won a tense 7-6 shootout at home Monday, February 16 but Lakefield responded with a 6-3 win on its home ice Friday, Feb- ruary 20. So far, the series has brought to mind the memor- able semi-final round last year that pitted the two WHEN IT COMES 70.............. "DONT PLAY AROUND! Port Perry won that meet in a sudden death sixth game. If the series continues to be close, the fans in both arenas are in for a treat. Center Rob Gilders led the Lakefield squad in that showdown last spring and he continues to do the same damage for the Midgets. He scored four times in the first game and matched that total in the second, causing the opposing Pacer pivots all kinds of headaches. Pacer Coach Doug Scott stated after the second game that Port 'can't concentrate on one guy. It's up to each individual center to watch ° him." Coach Scott was in charge of the Bantams last year and had masterful center Donny Young to key on Gilders. No the Pacers can match Young's skating abili- ty and keep up with Gilders. The convalescence of Paul Storry from his separated shoulder injury has hurt the squad in this area. All three Pacers goals in the second game were scored by players who were on the Bantam team that played Gilders last year. Center Jeff Johnstone got the first on and wing Jamie Lane scored the other two in the game Coach Scott admitted that his team did not play well. Lane's second goal at 2:02 of the third period gave Port a 3-2 lead. He was trailing the play in the slot area and took a centering pass from Kevin Long in the corner, depositing it behind Shawn Williams in the Lakefield net. Lakefield staged its second series with four unanswered goals. Gilders tied it with 8:43 remaining on a slap shot from the point, where he played on the power plays, that goaltender Clay Lover- ing was screened on. The hosts went ahead to stay on an artistic play less than two minutes later. Gord Davey put Mike Burke into the clear with an expert head-man pass but Burke hit the post. Davey alertly followed up the rebound and popped it in. Williams played a solid game between the Lakefield pipes. He stymied Bob Horton in close twice after taking the lead. Earlier, Horton was felled by team- mate Keith Trembley's shot and had to be removed from the ice. Gilders added an in- surance marker with 2:26 to go when he picked up a loose puck inside the Pacer blue line, took a few strides down the left wing, and blasted a slap shot along the ice into the opposite corner of the net. Lovering moved out on the play but Gilders simply blasted it behind him. Gilders finalized the scoring shot taken from the top of the face-off circle in his own end. Port trailed 1-0 at the end of the first period but John- stone tucked a soft shot into a small opening to tie it mid-way through the second. Lane shot Port ahead 2-1 with a shorthanded goal at the 9:41 mark of the second period. Gilders tied it before the end of the frame on a power play with Scott Wallace off. Lakefield went into the third period of the first match down 5-2 before staging a strong comeback. Wallace scored in the first minute of play before Burke scored one and Gilder pocketed a single period hat trick. Gilders stole the puck from Horton and flipped it in over Lovering, who was dropping to his knees. That made it 6-5 as the momentum swung decidely in the visitor's favour. Left wing John Vaz scored the winning goal with 5:05 yet to be contested on a shot from the left side that went in off a defenceman's skate. Ron Pearson aided the opener with a goal and three assists. He had two excellent scoring chances stonewalled by Lovering late in the match while Todd Menzies was serving a penalty. Gilders made it close in the last minute when he put in his own rebound with 53 seconds to go moments after Menzies had emerged from the penalty box. Horton paced Port Perry with four points, two on goals. In the second period he stepped over the blue line and blasted a shot into the upper corner, making it 4-2 and finally managed to break free from tight check- ing to beat Williams with 1:03 left in the same frame. The first period ended in a 1-1 deadlock. Pearson deked Lovering at 4:40 to open the scoring and Long scored on the end of a perfectly execu- ted three way passing play. Wallace started it with a clearing pass to Vaz, who carried it into the Lakefield end before dropping it behind for a 'trailing Long, who knocked it in from the left wing.
