The previous night Stirling registered a 5-0 shutout over Port Perry. The Blues swept Port in three straight games a year ago and look ready to _ do it again. The third game is slated for Port Perry on Sunday, March 8, at 8:00 p.m. Center Tim Thompson scored twice for Port and forward Carl Durward notched one goal. Defence- man Dale Geer added two assists. Port Perry was under- staffed along the blue line as they started with four defencemen, sitting out Pat Taylor and Todd Blayone. Scott Sandison returned to the line-up after a prolonged absence due to an injured ankle. He played on the forward line for the first half of the game but moved to the backline when Brad Hurst left the game with a hip ailment at 6:47 of the second period. Hurst was hurt in his ~ Tei CRIS ACE EARL SOE TC Ce AEG 5 NAAN FLEA Af No R et ab Samii niy AE HE KRY PAE GER Mh BAL NER APTS GV I EA ERE A Le with Danny Millar own end and was down for several minutes, before being helped off the ice. He was taken to the dressing - room during the next stop- page in play. Until then, Hurst had been paired with Hal Storry and Mike Andrews teamed up with Geer on defense. Either Taylor or Blayone, or pos- sibly both is likely to dress for the third game if Coach Don Hurst decides to go with five defencemen or should Hurst be unable to continue. The Blues don't seem to be the powerhouse squad they were during the past two seasons when they were Silver Stick tournament champions, but they still have a strong skating and passing team led by Sills, Steve Garmont, and Brian Doxtator. HARMAN SHARP Ken Harman, the midget age netminder, was a stand- out between the pipes for Port as he kept the game close right to the end. Time after time he came out to challenge the shooters as his style dictates and all but four times was successful. He was removed with 28 seconds remaining in favour of an extra attacker. Pee Wee B's capture two game lead On Saturday night the Port- Perry George Stone Realtors hosted Stirling for the first. game of the best of five semi-finals and soared to a 16-2 victory with the Port team playing their best game of the year by far. Port started it off with a goal on each of the first three shifts and never looked back despite only leading 3-2 after the first period. In the second period Port skated to a fine five goals to have an 8-2 lead. The third period seemed very long as the Stirling team seemed to give up and Port scored eight times in the final frame to finish it up. Jim Abraham, Mike John- son and Willie Edwards all picked up hat-tricks while Chris Cookman and Karl Durham picked up two each. Other Port Perry point earners were Ron Brown with one goal and four assist, Mike Gibson and Steve Solomon each had one goal and a pair of assists. Blair Phillips earned three. Port assists, Brian Dean two and Bob Goble and Boyd Van- derheul "got singles. Kevin Cearns played- very well in the net for Port, not facing many shots. The tide turned in that department on Sunday night as Port travelled to Stirling and came away with a 6-1 victory despite the way the game changed. It was a much more even contest than the score says as the Stirling team had many more shots on the net than previously and their goal- tending was much improved. But that did not stop Port as they kept on firing all the shots they could and the defence kept the puck in the opposing end most of the time. Karl Durham, Steve Solomon, and Mike Johnson all gained one goal and an assist. Willie Edwards, Ron Brown and Blair Phillips all earned singles. Mike Gibson picked up two assists with Doug Dusty, Bob Goble, and Jim Abraham gaining singles. Port's next and hopefully last game of this series is next Saturday night in Port Perry at 7:30 p.m. Come out and support these PeeWee's - see what they can do. The Stirling Blues goaltender was a busy man Sunday night as he held on to lift his team to a 4-3 win over Port Perry Juveniles at the Scugog Arena. Port series with the next game slated for the Scugog Arena Perry had a great chance to tie the score in the late this Sunday evening. Port enjoyed a power play in the dying minutes but it proved to be a problem area. They lacked the cohesive- ness and the ability to break out of their own end while playing with a man advan- tage. In the final seconds, playing six skaters against the Blue's four, Tim Parker made a bad pass that was intercepted and nearly turned into an empty net goal. Port Perry was more successful while they were shorthanded, as Thompson "scored at 1:05 while Sandison was off for slashing. Left wing Brian Mikkellsen set up the goal with a perfectly executed drop pass to Thompson in front of goaler Warren Doxtator. Thomp- son put his second tally past the Stirling puck stopper in one motion after receiving the puck. Port could mount only one serious offensive play during its last chance when Dur- ward shot right on the net and Parker tried to jam in the rebound. Parker was sitting out a penalty at 2:08 of the third when Sills scored the winning goal from direct- ly in front of Harman after a set up from Garmont. Port Perry never led in the game and in fact it never trailed by less than one goal. Todd Ferguson broke open a scoreless game at 1:14 of the second period as Dickson was off for elbowing. He beat Harman ..with a-wrist --shot that made if just under the cross bar after Stirling kept the puck in Port's end for a lengthy period. =~ Doxtator scored a- short- handed goal for the Blues on a rebound after Garmont hit the post less than two minutes later, making it 2-0. Thompson narrowed the margin to a single goal when he literally blew a shot past goalkeeper Doxtator from outside the blue line. It was a low, hard shot about a foot off the ice, just under the netminder's glove. Sills scored his first of the evening before the second -- period ended as he raced. down the right wing and pocketed the third Blues goal with 4:47 left on the clock. Geer was unable to break loose as he was tied up effec- tively in front of the net. Port drew within one for the second time at 13:25 when Parker found Durward alone in front of the net and slid a pass over to the center- man, who got the shot away quickly before Doxtator had a chance to react. Mikkellsen has been one of the key figures in the team's impressive performance during the second half of this year. He lines up with Thompson and Dickson as the club's most dangerous trio. These two losses were the first time Port has tasted . defeat since the playoffs began. They swept Uxbridge and Lakefield in three games each in the preylous six -- matches. 5 FRX 7, wi rf HERE ERAT J Yam El ¥ The series between the two teams last year would rather be forgotten by most Port Perry sports fans. The third and final match was termi- nated late in the third period after Port showed no inclina- tion or desire to play the game. It was a penalty filled affair that ended when Port Perry players serving penal- _ties threw a garbage can on the ice, spilling its contents over the ice surface. Coach Don Hurst is a tough onsen re at es Ty TL Te PC seconds when Stirling took a penalty, but to no avail. Stirling now has a 2-0 stranglehold on the best of five disciplinarian and there has been little resemblance to the squad of a year ago. Hurst led the Midget B team which comprises most of this unit, to an all-Ontario title two years ago. The juveniles are the first PPMHA team to make it as far as the third round but their backs are against the ropes being down two games to none in a best of five series. Tough loss for Midget B's by Danny Millar Port Perry Ball Motors and Broncos played their best hockey game of the round robin Midget B series against Pickering Village Wednesday, February 25 but still wound up on the short end of a 5-3 score at Scugog Arena. Strong goaltending from Jerry Jackman Jr., repl-. acing the absent Peter Christie, kept Port Perry in the match until Rick Due- den scored with 21 seconds left. Duerden burned the Brones in his last visit to Port Perry and scored twice in this contest. His last goal -came-on-a quick wrist shot during a two man break- away. He made it 3-1 at 4:19 of the second period on a backhand shot from the side of the net. v Jackman got more support from his defenceman, some- thing that Christie did not get. Defenceman Alan Jones made a good sweep check to stop one rush early in the third period but Roy Chri- tenson, with his second, scored before Port could clear the puck. Hustling winger Gregg Williams scored the Broncos first marker of the contest when he flipped the puck over a downed Richard Poole, after Ted Bryant had opened the scoring earlier in (Turnto page 14)
