They were down ,by eight points and had just completed a quarter that was dominated by the Lakers. But, led by Scott Wallace and Todd Wilbur, thé Rebels surged in the third quarter, overcoming the Roberts lead and took home the title with an exci- ting 41-38 win at Durham College on Saturday, Feb- ruary 28. Wallace has been the storybook player for the Rebels. He added his second superb defensive game since moving into a starting role when Brett Oosterman was hurt, and tossed in a game high 15 points. He wound up with 12 points. Wilbur scored what has to rank as the most important two points of his cager career earlier in the week as he sank a last second shot to edge O'Neill Redmen by a single point. Center Peter Stone was another key factor for the Rebels, though he tipped in only five points. He control- led the rebounds at both ends of the court and was pitted against toweing Tim Pye in most of the battles. Stone is another Rebel who has come up with big efforts since the Oosterman injury. Ooster- man was on the sidelines for the game and is still debilia- ted with torn knee ligament problems. It will take a miracle for him to return to action this year, and there doesn't seem to be any Red Seas on the horizon. The College sporting complex was almost packed and a very large portion, at least 50 per cent, seemed to be Port Perry supporters. It was one of the noisiest crowds that any Rebel team has heard. Roberts ran into foul trouble in the first quarter, picking up four team fouls in the opening four minutes, obviously hampered by the tension packed atmosphere. There were several turn- overs by both teams in the early going, also evidence of jittery nerves by the star- ters. Port had all kinds of prob- lems penetrating the tough 1-3-1 zone presented by the Lakers. Of its six points, four came on long range shots from the perimeter of the zone by Wilbur and Robert Burnett. A field goal by Ken Upshaw at the buzzer gave Roberts a 10-6 advan- tage after eight minutes. The Lakers dominated the second quarter as the only bright moment for the Port Perry contingent came with 3:17 to go when Burnett made a three point play. They nearly tore the roof off the building after that per- formance. Burnett connected on a long jump shot just before the buzzer sounded to end the first half. It was a key basket as it prevented the Rebs from returning to the floor in the third quarter down by a margin in double figures. The third quarter belonged to Port Perry. They allowed just two points while scoring 14. Late in the frame, Stone rebounded and scored on a bank shot and Wallace turned another steal into a layup and Port went ahead 28-26. Predictably, the Port fans responded jubilantly. Wallace hit with a shot from the top of the key with one second remaining to give - Port Perry a 30-26 advan- tage. It also marked a last second hoop in each of the first three periods. The Lakers switched defences in the last frame of the match, instituting a 2-2-1 zone as they tried to cut down on the shooting of Wallace. Later Burnett scored on an inbounds pass from Wilbur and the Rebels rolled up a seven point lead, "heir biggest of the match. Port Perry Coach Glenn Rideout made only one substitution in the entire game before bringing back forward Mark Phillips late in the match as Roberts started to press. Phillips had been lifted in the first half for Peter Christie, who perform- ed strongly in the relief role. Roberts displayed a press with just over a minute to go as they narrowed the lead. They went to a man-to-man defence when Port managed to bring the ball into their end, clearly a desperation move. With the lead cut to three points and Roberts about to inbounds the ball, Port took a time-out with three seconds left. It was obvious that the only thing the Rebels had to worry about was stopping the three point play, in effect not fouling any Laker as he took the shot. They used possible defence when the resumed their positions on the court - standing perfectly still with hands in front of their bodies - as they were conceeding the two points but would not take the foul. Port Perry now plays Saturday, March 7 again at Durham College as they vie for the Central Ontario title. Jr. softball team forming There will be a Junior Men's Softball Club operat- ing in Port Perry this season for players 21 years and under as of January 1, 1981. All players in the Scugog area are invited to try out for the club which will more than likely be wearing the colours of the Mother's Pizza Stores. They will be playing in the Oshawa City and District League and in July will compete in the Junior elim- ination tournament (in Osh- awa) 'to name the Ontario representatives in the Cana- dian championship.
