Mr. Adamson, a high school teacher from North York, campaigned last Friday in Scugog Township and met with party workers and supporters at the cam- paign office on Queen Street. _""We're losing our rich agricultural land at a rate of close to 20 acres an hour," he said. "It's some of the most productive ground in North America - from the green produce farms of the Holland Marsh to the grain belt near Claremont, Brougham and Kinsale and the mixed farms around Beaverton, Sunder- land and Cannington. "York region alone has lost some 80,000 acres since 1966 with nothing on the statute books - no realistic zoning regulations - to slow the encroaching pavement." At present more than 75 per cent of produce handled at the Toronto food terminal is imported, Adamson said, not counting citrus fruit and storeable crops like potatoes and onions. "Ontario farm incomes now average lower than those in Quebec. Ontario's net farm income decreased by 32 per cent in 1980 while operating expenses for this year are forecast to grow by 19 per cent and depreciation charges by 14 per cent. Between January and November last year 112 farmers declared bankrupt- cy as against just 64 in 1979," he stated. It's not marginal land that is at issue, Adamson stress- ed. "We've seen the results in other parts of the pro- vince. Some of Canada's best orchards and vineyards are now buried under the suburbs of places like St. Catharines, Grimsby, Hamilton and much of the land between there and Toronto. Now we see deve- lopers pushing on past Oshawa - all on prime agricultural land. "Where is the foresight in that argument? - Under the Tories this province has been paving over its best renew- able resource. I can think of no more critical an issue for all our concerns on March 19," he declared. These included Leanne Kerr, Rob Flim, Laural Holtby, Mary McKel- vey, and Craig Mullen. The other band members were Martha McCallum, Debbie Ball, Belinda Espley, Lynne O'Reilly, Rob Scott and Mary Lou Bougeois. The band accompanied Hugh on "The Way We Were" and "Climb Every Mountain" and performed "You Light Up My Life" on their own. Also accompanying Hugh was Russ Baird on piano and guitar. Although Hugh sounded marvelous with the band, and the guitar and the voice combination was a lot of fun, the real thrill of the evening was Hugh with the piano. Hugh has a voice that some- how is a perfect compliment to the piano. The voice and the piano that evening paint- ed beautiful picture after beautiful picture.
