As the Scugog Youth Soccer Club enters its third year of operation a great many plans have already been made and put into action, such as coaches and referee's clinics that will be held in March and April. As we believe, as does the Ontario Soccer Association, that the best way to improve 'soccer is to train the people who train the players. Novice Stars down Markham by Don Steele The Port Perry Pearce Auctioneers hosted the Markham Select Novices on Friday March 6th, in a exhibition match. When the final buzzer sounded, the Auctioneers were on top 5-1. Clair Cornish opened the scoring at 1:14, on an unassisted effort. At 3:31, Danny Maw netted one from Brian Appleby and Sean Bradbury. Brian then put Port on top by 3 at 2:31 of the second period, slamming in a rebound, with assists being awarded to Chris Legere and Jeff Mills. Clair scored his second goal of the evening at the mid-point of the period after taking a fine pass from Adam Cummings. With three minutes re- maining, Ryan La Rocca lost his shutout bid when Mark- ham finally got on the score sheet. The final goal of the game came from Eric Gros- venor just before the buzzer sounded to end the second period. The assist on this effort went to Jarett Harman. Both teams were held scoreless in the third period for a final 5-1 victory for the Auctioneers. Playoff action resumed on Sunday when the Auc- tioneers travelled to Peter- borough. Although Port played one of the finest games of the season, they were defeated 3-2 by the powerful Peterborough squad. The Petes were first on the board at 1:55 of the first period. Derek Scott fired a high shot just under the crossbar to make it 1-0. Port evened the score with 49 seconds remaining in the period on a fine move by Jarett Harman, assisted by Chris Legere. Peterborough netted two more in the sec ond period. The eventual winning marker was by Scott who stole the puck and beat netminder LaRo¢ca while Port had a man advantage. The Auctioneers came back with Clair Cornish netting one with 16 seconds left in the period, from Sean Bradbury and Danny Maw. The third period was scoreless, with both teams playing superb hockey. Port Perry played one of their best passing games of the season and are to be congratulated on their fine team effort. Ryan LaRocea in net played with confidence, thwarting the Pete shooters on numerous occasions. The Auctioneers have two playoff games remaining. On Monday March 9th, they travel to Markham, then host Stouffville on Friday in the final game of the series.
