The sharp Woodbridge goalie was beaten by a super play by Willie Edwards with the assist going to Brian Dean. The second period was much the same, with Port having numerous chances to score. Woodbridge was playing a very chippy game, when finally the referees clamped down, giving them a total of eleven penalties, while our boys kept cool taking only three. The tension and excite- ment was high with a minute and twenty-two seconds left in the game. Jim Abraham scored a neat one from a scramble, the assist going to Ron Brown. With only twenty-two seconds left in the game Boyd Vanderheul put the icing on the cake with an unassisted goal. Although Port Perry out- shot Woodbridge 35-7, Kevin Cearns, in the Port net made Lots of interest in Midget tourney by Danny Millar According to Tournament Chairman Wayne Venning he has already received some inquiries from teams wishing to enter this summer's annual Midget softball tournament. Port Perry has landed the Elimination tourney for the second straight year. An elimination tourna- ment, such as this one, serv es as provincial champion- ship. In the case of the midgets, the winner will advance to the Canadian championships held this year in Swift Current, -Saskatchewan. Last year's Ontario winner Binbrook, captured the National title in Prince Edward Island and will compete in the World Youth Games this summer. Mr. Venning has also lined up sponsorship money from A rink from the Oshawa Golf Club won the annual Vachon but preferred that the amount not become known. He also has secured the softballs from Rawlings and Irwin Sports in Toronto, who will supply these rather expensive items free of charge. He also said that he would have more details following the Ontario Amateur Softball Association's meeting in A- pril. Several points concerning the tournament, including entry fees, will not be settled until they have been resolved by the delegates. Port Perry will be assured of having its own team entered and the squad will be coached by Ken Goreski, who took the team to the all-Ontario tournament last year as Bantams. They will play their league games in the York-Durham circuit this season. Beare Motors Bonspiel held last Friday and Saturday at the Port Perry Curling Club. Accepting the trophy somé outstanding saves to gain his shut-out. The entire team worked very hard and played extremely well for this victory. Willie Edwards then scored himself, with Chris Cookman and Steve Solomon notching assists. Woodbridge then came back with two quick goals to tie the score. It was very frustrating for Port as they had real problems with the Woodbridge netminder who played fantastic, as did our goalie Kevin Cearns. The score didn't remain tied for "long, as Willie Edwards notched his second with Mike Gibson gaining an assist. Right after that Ricky Perry fed the puck to Karl Durham who head manned it to Ron Brown, who, with a beautiful shot made the score 4-2. It remained that way until Woodbridge pulled their goalie in the final minute. Port's centre Karl Durham shot the puck down the ice through the crease. Finally some determined fore- checking by Jim Abraham enabled Ron Brown to score his second and put the game away. It is not known at this time who the Pee Wee B's will face in the championship or when the series will get underway. The Midget Girls' basketball team at Port Perry High School won the consolation prize at a recent COSSA tournament in Pickering. High School Midget Girls On Tuesday March 17th, the Port Perry High School Midget Girls Volleyball team represented the area in the Central Ontario Volleyball Championships at Pickering High School. In the semi-finals Port Perry defeated Donevan Collegiate by winning two of the three games. In the other semi-finals Pickering easily defeated Cobourg in two straight games. The C.0.S.S.A. finals pitted Port Perry against Pickering, the champions at L.0.S.S.A. on March 10th. Pickering won the first game easily and Port Perry fought capture silver at C.0.5.S.A. back to win the second game. The final for the champion- ship swayed back and forth . early in the last game but Pickering won a victory with consistant overall play. Port Perry showed good team play and spiked the ball well for a midget team. The team has enjoyed an excellent season. They placed first in league play with nine teams, fourth in L.0.S.S.A. against ten teams and an exceptional'second at C.0.5.S.A. against ten teams. Port curlers win Fred Lucas trophy Two teams from the Port Perry Curling Club skipped by Ralph Fairman and Ron Parish captured the Fred Lucas trophy in all-Ontario playdowns held Sunday at the Brampton Curling Club. The Fairman-Parish rinks reached the finals with a victory in the inter-divisional playdowns held Saturday at Bayview Curling Club in Toronto, winning two games.
