Durham council last week approved construction of a Works department depot this year to serve Uxbridge and new Regional Scugog Townships. The 11,500 square foot building will be located in Scugog Township at the intersection of Regional west of Roads 23 and 1, Utica. Estimated cost of the project is $573,000, with some $420,000 of this amount already budgeted for in 1980 and 1981. While council agreed that construction would start this year, the remaining $150,000 needed to pay for the new 'New books arriving at the Scugog Memorial Library are as follows: Lucy, The Beginnings of Humankind, D. The new depot had' originally been slated for construction last year at the same time salt and sand storage facilities were built. However, the council decided last year to defer the depot until 1981, and there was speculation that council might defer the project for another year in light of the substantial increases in the overall Durham budget this year. The new depot will replace the existing Regional building in Manchester, a New library books 'Cohen; Triple, K. Follett (Large Print). The Tightrope Walker, D Gilman (Large Print); The Future Sea, G. GoiS P.--Desbarats; XPD, L.__ ~¢ 2625 CC building which Durham"s Works commissioner Bill Twelvetrees last week called "decrepit and no longer suitable." He went on to say that it is very inconvenient for the Roads department to operate with the salt and sand storage sheds seven miles away from the existing garage in Manchester. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor argued in favour of approving the project for construction this year, ad did Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm who said "there would be nothing gained" by putting off construction for another year. Regional councillors, including finance committee chairman John Aker, agreed that the new building is needed at this time, but the sticky part was whether to take the $150,000 from this year's budget. At one point, Mayor Taylor suggested that half come from this year's budget and the rest next year. However, council finally agreed to take all the $150,000 from the 1982 budget. It is expected that construction on the new building will get underway this summer. ICICIACHC oop lop Lo [om To SSeS 555255252525 S 66 Brock St. W., Uxbridge 852- 5291 525252525252525 5 5 0000000!
