PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., March 25, 1981 -- 3 TT EP FT cugog faces huge deficit (From page 1) increases in local spending could mean a tax hike in the "neighbourhood of 20 per cent for property owners. Finance committee chair- man John Wolters told the Star his committee first determined that the Town- ship was facing a large deficit when the auditors finished their final work on the 1980 spending last week. He said the committee met to discuss the problem Monday morning and would be holding more meetings this week. Councillor Wolters said the committee is still not certain what the final amount of the oyer-expenditure will be, but _ he did agree that it will be in the $200,000 range. He pointed out some of the individual areas which make up the deficit: - $59,000 for engineering on the Queen Street recon- Aldred officially resigns from Scugog Library Brd. _, Joel Aldred has decided to 1at his resignation from the Scugog Library Board stand. Mr. Aldred, who was appointed by council amid controversy late last year submitted his resignation from the Board last month. However, members of council declined to accept the resignation and asked Mr. Aldred to: re-consider and continue as a member of - the Board. In a letter to council this week, Mr. Aldred stated that he would not change his mind and his resignation would stand. The letter was not tabled at . Monday's council meeting, but it is expected it will be made public at the next meeting of council. There have been three applications from Township residents interested in sitting on the Library Board, and council will make an appointment at its regular meeting early in April. Mr. Aldred has been a vocal critic of the plan to build a new library on Water Street, and when council decided to appoint him to the Library Board rather than Chuck Preston who was chairman at the time, the decision touched off a heated controversy which resulted in a sharply worded letter to council from Library Board, members criticizing Mr. Aldred's appointment. Last month, without knowing that Mr. Aldred was planning to resign from the Board, chairman Elaine Hammett of Port Perry resigned her position, claiming "undue harass- ment" on the part of Mr. Aldred. Mrs. Hammett was appointed by the school board, and that board appointed former chairman Chuck Preston to take her - place. The letter from Mr. Aldred sent to council this week confirming his earlier decision to resign is a lengthy one, and apparently goes into considerable detail about why he no longer wants to be a member of the Library Board. Meanwhile, at a Library board meeting last week, Mr. Preston was voted chairman of the board. struction project which was not included in the total budget. "a - $15,000 over budget for short term bank interest charges. 4 - $16,000 over budget for planning and zoning. - $9,000 over budget for legal fees. - $15,000 out-of-court settle- ment to a Township resident | resulting from a building permit issued more than seven years ago. - $28,000 for bridge repairs last summer at Seagrave. - $15,000 that was not budgeted for the compre- hensive zoning by-law. - $26,000 in the roads budget. Councillor Wolters said the finance committee will prepare a detailed report for council outlining exactly the expenditures which make up the deficit, why they occurred and what can be done to correct them. He expects this report will be presented to council before the 1981 local budget is: completed. Councillor Malcolm told members of council that all of the Township reserve funds have been committed to the point where there can be no new projects in 1981. 'It looks like the reserves have gone dry," he stated. oO ell EN'S JARMAN *Leather sole - Fil MEN'S SLACKS $29.95 Single Roll $2.99 to $6.99 WINDOW SHADES Drapery WALLPAPER | PRE-SPRING 1981 BUICK CENTURY SEDAN - silver with blue interior, air conditioning, power lock."
