PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., April 1, 1981 -- 13 ~ Coaches, managers meet to air views by Danny Millar About 20 Port Perry Minor Hockey Association coaches, trainers, and managers turned out at Emiel's Place Restaurant for a meeting Sunday, March 28th. The meeting was intended as a sounding board for 1 suggestions and criticism : from the team officials. The most time consuming area came from the house league coaches as t suggested ways of improfng and coming up with rhore practice time, It has long been a ticklish problem. for PPMHA Executives and nothing was definitely set at this meeting. House 'league coaches have had problems getting youngsters out to practices. The feeling that came out of the meeting was that this was more often than not the fault of the parents, who simply didn't feel like chauffering their young athletes to the arena for practices. Another problem often voiced by the HL skippers was a lack of practice times. There were two sugges- tions for this area of concern. The idea that got the most support was to split the Saturday morning time, which is currently devoted entirely to playing HL games, into half practice and half game time. This had been suggested last year and seemed to gain a lot of support from the members around the room. Atoms open final Port Perry Malimont Farms Atoms earned the right to host Ernestown in a best of five series which starts in Port Perry on Wednesday, April 1 and continues Sunday April 5 in Ernestown. , Those dates had been set Sunday evening after it looked as though the teams SLIPS AVAILABLE PORT PERRY YACHT CLUB Reasonable Rates 6 MILES NORTH OF PORT PERRY + 725-2227 Registration At: THE SCOUT HALL - PORT PERRY - APRIL 4th & 5th 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. **COFFEE & SOCCER FILMS** would play twice on the April 4-5 weekend if Ernestown was unable to show up at Scugog Arena for the Wednesday night opener. However, Ernestown officials decided to make the trip and in turn Port will not have fo stay overnight on the weekend. Port Perry advanced to the head to head series after finishing in first place overall in an eight team tournament. Uxbridge was the only other CC team in that tournament but Port Perry advanced by virtue of its higher point total. "A second idea, put forth by PPMHA President Grant Williams, was that all four teams in each HL (except Bantam HL which has two teams) could practice at the same time, with coaches working in conjunction with the effect 6f doubling tHe younger players time spel practicing but would reduce the practice to a series of skating drills. One rather controversial suggestion made from the floor stated that the B teams should be folded so that the house leagues would have an improved level of play. The B teams at the midget and bantam categories were not strong this season, but the Pee Wee B team is currently involved in a provincial championship series. If this idea were brought to reality each other. This would iE it would likely put several midget players out of minor hockey. There hasn't been a 'midget HL here for several years. Two executive members who have worked with the house leagues this past season, Dennis Wray and Paul -Pelow, received well- deserved ovations and praise from the gathering of coaches as the meeting opened. The meeting concluded with some discussion on arranging a coaching clinic in Port Perry next year. This year, seven coaches from Port Perry ventured to Stoultville for the level one of the National Certification Program. It was also suggested that a first aid clinic be held next year. Several dates of future PPMHA gatherings came up at the meeting. The annual banquet is April 18th at the Legion Hall at a cost of $16.00 per couple. The annual meeting is Sunday, May 3 at the Old Town Hall. and the coaches meeting for next season was tentatively slated for September 13.
