Tans he 6g. ih 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., April 1, 1981 Port Perry Pee Wees take lead in series by Paul Van Camp On Sunday, March 29th, the Port Perry George Stone Realtors hosted Dresden in the first game of the best of five finals and skated to a 5-2 victory. The game was a very close one with either team having many chances. The Port players put forth their best effort of the year giving 100 per cent all of the game. Port Perry opened the scoring half-way through the first period. Jim- Abraham started us off with Ron Brown and Bob Goble picking up the assists. The lead was short lived as Dresden capitalized on a power-play before'the period was over. Ports center Willie Edwards gained the lead in the final seconds of the frame with Chris Cookman picking up the assist. Again the strong Dresden team tied the score in the first minute of the second. The score remained tied at two until the second period was almost over when Boyd Vanderheul scored from right beside the Dresden net. Mike Johnson and Blair Phillips earned assists on the play. The third period was very fast and exciting as both teams had many oppor- tunities to score but fine goaltending and defence kept the score down. Finally Jim Abraham scored again to put the icing on the cake with Karl Durham gaining an assist. Chris Cookman closed the scoring on a low slapshot from the point with only 19 seconds remaining. Willie Edwards and Mike Gibson notched assists on the last goal. The team now travels to Dresden to play the next two games on the fourth and fifth of April. This was the finest game that Port has played all season with every single player putting forth his most. The Sharon player fell, and Cornish was given a tripping. penalty to the complete surprise and disbelief of everyone in the arena. What happened is history, as Sharon easily scored playing five on four with empty nets. Despite the terrible tripping - call, we congratulated Sharon who eventually won the tournament by defeating Uxbridge in the final game. The Auctioneers season is drawing to a close. They have two exhibition games remaining and their own tournament on Good Friday. We would like to wish the Pee Wee B's and Atom A's good luck in their upcoming finals.
