LRA Militia leader wants Region to give employees paid time off The commanding officer of: the Ontario Reserve Regiment in Oshawa has requested that Durham Region employees in the reserve be granted two weeks off each year with pay to take part in special courses and annual trdining. The request comes from 'Lieutenant Colonel L.P. Morin, who notes in a letter to Durham countil that the and provincial governments permit their 'employees time off with pay for activity in the military reserve. The matter is expected to be dealt with by the full council April 1, as both the management committee of council and Durham's personnel department have urged that the request from the regiment be denied. Terry Stevens, Durham's commissioner of personnel, says in a report to council that while military service - training is worthy, there are other worthy causes such as working with the handi- capped or on community projects, and time off with pay for these is not permitted Mr. Stevens says that the federal government does allow employees time off with pay for military reserve work, but argues that Council ponders gun laws > Durham Region council - has been asked to endorse a resolution urging tougher penalties for anyone using a firearm during a crime, and for a mandatory death sentence for anyone who kills a police officer in the course of a crime. The request from Hamilton - Wentworth Regional council says that a minimum sentence of 20 years in jail should be imposed on anyone using a firearm in a criminal act, and that -killing a police officer should carry a mandatory death penalty with no appeal to the federal cabinet. The resolution was first dealt with by Durham council earlier this spring, but members decided to refer the resolution to the Durham Police commission for a recommendation. The Police Commission has agreed that the Hamilton resolution get unanimous approval, and Durham council's management committee is urging the full Durham council to do the same. "Regional council meets today April 1 and the matter will be on the agenda. : In calling on other munici- palities to endorse the resolution for tougher penalties, Hamilton- Wentworth regional council notes "that the laws of the country should be working not only to protect the lives of the citizens, but should also protect those who are hired to protect citizens from criminal acts." The Hamilton-Wentworth resolution goes on to say "the constant concern that Ex Argo to speak Sunday, April 5th at 7:30 p.m. Port Perry United Church is looking forward to an_ exciting evening with former Toxonto Argonaut Football pNyer Richard Lewis. i Richard graduated - from Portland State University in 1972 with Jachelor of Science Dire? in Health PENS Pencils - Markers All Colours PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 ) TORO FURNITURE WAREHOUSE COMPLETE HOME FURNISHINGS Others Advertise Nobody Beats Their Prices ... If the Durham council goes along with the request to endorse the resolution this - week, it will be sent to the Attorney-general of Ontario. and the federal Justice Minister. "national defense is a primary responsibility of the federal government, which it levies taxes." Defense is not a responsi- bility of municipal govern- ments, the report goes on to say, and there are no local taxes levied to support national defense project. Mr. Stevens says that if leave with pay were granted, it could cost Durham up to $5000 annually, but the figure "would be mugh higher if the military reserve became more popular with Durham's employees. He concludes his report to council by stating it would be more appropriate to give a leave of absence with pay if Durham Region were then reimbursed for the wages by the federal government. This issue has apparently been raised on several occasions before, with the "Region holding firm on its no leave with pay policy. And Durham's manage- ment committe of council still agrees with that policy. for Famous contralto at Town Hall 1873 No doubt about it, that legendary contralto of international reputation, Maureen Forrester, is scheduled to appear in Port Perry on Thursday, April: 23rd.
