The fans who travelled to * Stirling for that game saw a dandy. For sheer exgite- ment, those who were there were impressed and got their money's worth. How can anyone who was there say it '"'was not a typical playoff game?" The story suggested that a few players "carried the team." All seventeen players on the team played their hearts out for seventy minutes. They deserved some recognition for the Bad new for taxpayers Dear Sir: : The news that '"'Scugog faces huge deficit" and that taxes could increase about 20 per cent this year is more bad news for taxpayers. Excessive police costs have been a major part of the _ region increase accounting for 85 per cent of the total increase in- Regional spending for 1981. In the Star (March 25, 1981) Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor is reported to have voted against the motion to ask the provincifh govern- ment for more morfey to help pay for the $2.5 million police increase. "I am prepared to accept the budget' Taylor is quoted. The 1981 police budget is 17.7 per cent above last year -- close to'$17 million. Durham has spent some $45 million for water and sewer pipes -- most of it south of the ridges in Oshawa, Whitby-Pickering and Bowmanville, while Scugog faces a huge deficit. As a taxpayer in both Oshawa and Durham region I am sorely disappointed by these never-ending increases, and question why Mayor Taylor is prepared to accept the increases carte blanche and why he voted against the motion to ask for 'provincial funding to help.' cover the $2.5 million. It's actions like these that fire the flames of inflation, driving taxpayers to despair. Another coup de grace. Inflation can never be beaten if our elected officials don't take a strong stand on spending. Regional govern- ment is wasteful duplicity. Enough is enough! Dean J.
