He is avail- able by picking up the phone and calling him at the Oshawa' branch 'at 571-1355. Maclnnis- is a former executive with Frigidaire, Philco and Motorola and was appointed co-ordinator of the bank's Counselling Assis- tance to Small Enterprise in June 1978. His responsi- bilities for the program covers Scarborough, Durham Region, Northum- berland, Peterborough, Victoria and- Haliburton counties. MacInnis says about 80 _ percent of the businesses in Canada are small, (75 employees or less). Past and present trends indicate clearly that more and more people wish to be masters of their own destiny and have a -strong desire to operate and manage their own business. Many would-be entrep- eneurs have weaknesses in many areas, for example, their lack of 'purchasing ability, how to price, how to display merchandise, what stock to carry and how many turns of inventory they should anticipate for maxi- mum profitability. There are a multitude of problems that can beset any business at any time. Many times; the problems result from inad- equate financial planning, poor forecasting and under- capitalization, Many lack the ability to establish efficient bookkeeping systems; prompt collection of accounts receivable, along with prompt payment of suppliers' invoices. are common problems. Some businessmen commit themselves to leases without sufficient careful study of the contents, and consequently find them- selves in a great deal of trouble." Unfortunately, many. small businesses do not call - for help until it is too latge. "There are enough problems running a business, without gatting off on the wrong feot,"" said MacInnis. "Counselling saves a lot of ~ tire, money, frustration and griof." -Maclnnis's counsellors are retived business people, mos of whom have gone throws 1 the trial and error meth! of conducting busine: es over the past thirty 1. ars, and can rem- ember 'i e benefits of their experieiv e, The Lu kground of our counsello-. covers virtually every segr. ent of business. There are 55 counsellors 11 the Oshawa, Lindsay area. (including. those in Cobourg and Port Hope), but the Bank has access to 500 in 'Ontario and 2,000 throughout Canada. While it does not happen often, there are occasions when a counsellor. . is requested to visit another ~ provinced, because of his "particular expertise. When this occurs, . the expenses incurred for travel are absorbed by the Bank. After the initial enquiry, it is Maclnnis's job to select a counsellor with the right background for the part- icular situation involved. The counsellor, after oneor a number of interviews puts his recommendations in a report to MacInnis, who examines and edits the report and sends a copy to the client.
