r--C------ > OLS SS--------C) - 2-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, April 15, 1981 Family enjoys reunion after more than 60 years It's been a joyous occasion during the past few weeks for the Foster families. * Leonard Foster who has lived in Australia for the best - part of his life flew to Canada - and met his brother and sister after being separated for 61 years. It was back in 1922 that Stan, Leonard, Minnie and the late Reg Foster of Greenbank, left their home in England to come to Canada. And then two years later, Len decided to leave for Australia. Until last year, when Stan' Foster flew to Australia to visit his brother, there had been no - physical contact with the family for those sixty years. It was during this visit that Stan invited his brother to come to Canada for a reunion of the family, and thjs dream was fulfilled on Sunday, March 29th, when Len arrived in Canada. During the three week reunion, there have been many family get-togethers "including a party held on Saturday, April 4th at the Greenbank Hall which 65 relatives - attended. This Saturday, April" 19th .a farewell party will be held for Mr. Len Foster at his sister-in-law's home Mrs. Velma (Reg) Foster, in Greenbank. Leonard will then leave his family once again and return to his home in Australia, this time with .many fond memories he will cherish for the remainder of his life. 1981 taxes going up (From page 1) tighter controls on spending. He agreed with a suggestion from regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm that a "red-flag" system-be set up whereby as soon as 75 per cent of the budget for any account has been spent, this is '"red-flagged" for council's attentions. In specific areas of the 1981 budget, fire protection will cost $175,000 this: year, opposed to $143,000 last year. ' Part of the increase will go for equipment for the - recently purchased fire truck and the rest for general operating increases. But there is no money for an addition to the fire hall in Port Perry this year. Finance committee chair- man John Wolters says this should be completed next ] HELPFUL HINT ~Dampen the brushes of your carpet sweeper before * using and it will do a much better job of picking up lint and string. = year. In the meantime, the council is trying to line up storage space for one of the department's fire trucks. Although the budget passed without any cuts or revisions, there was con- siderable discussion on a couple of proposed amendments. The first was a request from the Port Perry Down- town Beautification committee for $3500 for trees, plants and planter barrels. Council turned that request -down flat, also a recommendation that $1000 'be turned over to the committée, and finally agreed to give the comniittee $250 from mistellaneous revenues this year. And Ward 2 councillor Robert Espey was upset when he discovered that $5000 was not in the budget this year to. help pay for re-surfacing of the Port Perry tennis courts. He asked that this amount be included in the 1981 . spending, but could not get a LLLiL) TED 146 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY (Opposite the New Commerce Bank) Just in Time for EASTER DECORA TING!! Council did agree, however, to an. additional $1000 for sanding the floor of the Nestleton Hall, and $550 for a new crash door on the library on Queen Street. An example of just how tight the financial picture is for the municipality this year can be illustrated by the municipal. projects fund. It has been the practise in the past for council to budget about $100,000 each year: from the levy for this fund (it was $89,000 in 1980) but this year, the fund will have just -- $20,000. - Council did get one bit of encouraging news on Monday. There appears tobe renewed interest in new home construction after a disastrous couple of years where the number of building permits issued slowed to a trickle. That could help increase 'the natural assessment growth, and in the case where a new lot is created, -the Township receives $1000 in lot levy fees. | -- 0. 9 Pompadour TEA BAGS Camomile, Rosehip & Peppermint.
