---- Cancer Society needs more volunteer drivers About once a week for the last 12 years, Ralph Wilbur of Port Perry has-been driv- ing the 100 mile round trip from here. to downtown Toronto. Ralphisa voligiteer driver. with the Scugog Branch of the Canadian Cancer soci- ety, and his passengers for thé trip. to- Toronto' are - cancer patients from this area who are taking treat- : ment at Princess Margaret Hospital. Canada, and while the local organization is busy with its #Msual fund-raising activities, , the Scugog Branch of the Society needs more volun- teer drivers for this special service. Ralph, who is retired from - General Motors, is an out- going man with a ready 'smile, and says he finds the volunteer work: "A reward- ing experience for me, personally." "We gets to know many of ApH 3s is cancer month in the paijeuis on- a personal Ralph Wilbur has been a Sounleer driver for 'the Scugog Branch of the Cancer Society for the past 12 years. He averages one trip per week taking out-patients from here to Princess 'Margaret Hospital in Toronto. basis, and 'most talk openly and freely about their condition. = °° ost of the patients he drives are elderly who do not have access to transport- 'ation, and there is no charge to the patient for 'this service. There are presently about 8 residents of Scyugog who 'are taking treatment on an out-patients basis at Princess Margaret Hospital. He says on a yearly basis, he" averages one trip to Toronto each week, but on occasion will make as many as three in one week. . Sometimes, he will wait at the hospital until the patient has received treatment and return the same day. Or, he will drive patients at the beginning of the week for a series of treatments and then return on Friday to bring them back home. He allows about one and a half hours to make the trip from Port Perry to the hospi- tal, and depending on traffic conditions, it usually takes him slightly less than that. Ralph says driving the city traffic, including the Don < Valley Parkway doesn't bother him at all. But he ~ cautions that anyone inter- ested in volunteer driving - should- have some experi- ence with rush hour traffic conditions in Toronto. There have been drivers who sin- cerely wanted to offer their services, but found the city traffic a bit too much. Including Ralph who is in charge of-the volunteer drivers, there are presently two other drivers from this 'area. He-hopes that some - younger people will get involved in the transporta- tion service. Although the drivers volunteer their time, they are re-imbursed by the Cancer Society for gas mileage. ' - If there are people in the community who would like to volunteer their time for this service, the Scugog branch of the Cancer Society wants to hear from you. Or, you "could call Ralph Wilbur at 985-2531. NEWS... ABOUT THE NEW LIBRARY! of Dr. C. Peterson. "The Following Letter was received by Mr. Ken Jackson."
