Hosted by the Lindsay and Pisteics Model Engineers ub, there were half a dozen exhibits in the show, includ- ing a spectacular display by the host club. Clive Boyd and Dr. Kevin Dunkerley of Port Perry are members of the Lindsay and District Club and they say that model railroading is a fascinating hobby. "It is more than just build- ing models. It is an interest and fascination with - the whole concept of railroads,' said Dr. Dunkerley. Mr. Boyd says the era of the steam locomotive is some thing that many people grew up with, and building models today is oné way of restoring and keeping alive a piece of our history. Both admit with a smile that some people think club members are just grown up kids playing with toy trains, but at the show Sunday after- noon, spectators of all ages showed a deep fascination with the exhibits. And. the display put to- gether by the Lindsay and District club members is anything but kids stuff. It is an elevated oval 56 feet long, 14 feet wide with three main. tracks, a complete - marshalling yard, tunnels, . bridges, miniature towns, landscapes, and engines and cars of all types which chug their way around the tracks powered by electricity. The complete display is valued at $15,000 minimum, and a single locomotive ..engine can cost as much as $800. There is just no way to calculate the countless hours of work which went into the building of the display. Some tiny figures, for example, were hand-painted with a tooth-pick. Mr. Boyd has been a member of the Club for the _ past four years, and Dr.. Dunkerley joined just over a year ago when he came to Port Perry to practise dentistry. The Lindsay Club's display is HO guage (1-87 Scale) and this is by far the most popular size among model railroad buffs. There are smaller and larger tracks. The Club keeps the display set up permanently in their meeting room in Lindsay and the 18 active members, who are all ages and come from varied 'walks of life, meet once a week to talk about their favourite topic: railroads. - : From time to time, the Club - takes the display on tour to shows in Toronto, Ottawa . and Barrie, and always there is a great deal of interest on the part of the public. The Club members are now - thinking of adding a third section to the display. The railway is a part of our history and heritage. Though steam has given way to diesel and electricity, and the rails now carry freight and. grain rather than people, model railroaders like Clive Boyd, Kevin Dunkerley and their fellow club members help to keep the aura and mystique alive.
