Port Perry had to scratch all the way for the champion: ship, which it won 4-3 in overtime, winning all three of its games by one goal margins. They beat Calvary Baptists of Oshawa 3-2 in the opener, and then outlasted Wallace Memorial. by the same score in the following fray. They tied Evangel Pentacostal 5-5 in the last round-robin game, Port was led offensively by the high scoring trio of wingers Dave and John Michel and centerman Dave Harris. Sandy Kiezebrink and Tom Perrigoe supplied solid backline support as they paired on defence. Port played the whole day with two lines and two defence pairings and played these five as a platoon. They controlled play fluidly while this unit was on the ice but all the games took an obvious turn for the worse when the second unit played. That's precisely what this Port Perry entry lacked from championship teams from past years. With only ten skaters, they did not have the bench strength and balanced scoring which it had with larger teams. Still, it manages to keep on winning, proving that a deep bench is not necessary in this type of hockey. Port also got solid goal- tending from Robert Michel throughout the tourney. He was, however, spotty in the Wallace game and did let in a soft goal in the first game. Port has a well-seasoned squad that has been together for several years now, and will likely remain intact for another couple at least. They won the Kawartha Leagues championship again this season, scoring 24 goals in the final two game series. Port lost a chance to win it in the dying seconds when the clock ran out as Bert Michel was leading a two man break with Harris. Port got careless early in the first period, with the score tied 1-1 allowing graceful Bob Glecoff to give Evangel the lead. Glecoff manouvred around Dave and John Michel and then side- stepped Perrigoe to beat Michel with a deke. All three Port players tried in vain to stick check him, Bert Michel made a second effort pay off as he tied the score minutes later when he slipped the puck behind goal- tender Chris Attersley while being sandwiched between two defencemen. The teams exchanged - goals again before the first wide-open period drew to a conclusion. Harris - set up John Michel, who fired in a wrist shot with 6:42 left, and Glecoff went defenceman Larry Mabley on a one on one and beat Michel. - By comparison, the second period featured less fire wagon hockey and more close checking. Dave Michel scored the only goal of the period on a rebound after John Michel swept down the around Babcock was given credit for (it. : Dave Michel completed his hat trick goal at 5:21 of the frame when his weak shot went in off Attersley's skate. It would have stood up as the winning goal had not Tony Turomec broken free around the defence to beat Michel before he ended up on the ice. : EN Port Perry played a much more disciplined style of play through the. first two games against Wallace Memorial and Calvary. They had to come back from one goal deficits each time to pull the game out of the fire. D. Powell put 'Wallace ahead early sn the second game of the day when his shot richocheted at least once behind a helpless Robert Michel. John Michel scored on a wrist shot from the slot with 6:22 left. It came on a power play. B. Boone scored late in the period on a shot from the face-off circle after Wallace won a face-off in the Port zone. Bert Michel was serving an illegal shot penalty at the time. Port took control in the second period and should have won by more than just one goal; save for some fine netminding work at the other end of the ice. They had their best chances in the middle of right wing and Attersley - the period during a power blocked his drive. Michel couldn't be blamed play but after it elapsed they never let up. John Michel for the fourth Evangel goal = came back with the tying early in the third period. It was a deflected shot from the point through a traffic jam so big that three policemen on horseback would. have been unable to clear it. Port seemed to be coming on strongly until the final ions PERRY This card is material retail minute when Kiezebrink took a penalty. They showed strong penalty killing in the third when they set up a four cornered box in the neutral zone and controlled the puck with precision passing. Wallace did not get a shot at Michel for over a minute and only ended up with three harmless shots juring the infraction, which lasted three minutes straight time. Port used a penalty to its advantage when Harris scored the winning goal on a power play, Port's second marker with a man advantage. It was a neat tally, concluding with a, deke, and the puck heading into the corner just inside the post. Perrigoe made a fine defensive play that might have saved the win when he broke up a, Wallace rush in the late going. Wallace buzzed all around the Port net in the final exciting seconds but Michel and his defencemen held their ground. pe Port got off on the right foot with a close win over Calvary in the first game of the day, which started just after 8:00 am, "Harris scored twice, including the winner, and Kiezebrink added a goal and an assist from his blue line spot. They combined on the first goal of the game at 2:50 when Harris dropped a pass -out to the point- from the corner, and then broke for the Oshawa net. Kiezebrink rifled a shot from the point and Harris, perfectly positioned, netted the rebound. Harris started the play with strong fore- checking in the corner when he had to knock a Calvary player off the-puck. Kevin Jonkin caught Port with its guard down to score a shorthanded goal through Michel's legs. Goals by Harris and Keizebrink in the final period, after Calvary took the lead in the second, won it for Port. P.O.
