Report rules out any Scugog dump expansion There will be no expansion of the garbage dump in Scugog Township. Durham Region council last week accepted a report from a consulting geologist that the soil in the 100 acre proposed expansion area to the west of the existing dump is not suitable for landfill purposes. However, with the existing dump on Regional Road 8 just west of Port Perry expected to be filled within the next five years, Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor wanted to know what plans Durham Region has for an alternative site for Township garbage disposal. Durham's commissioner of public works Bill Twelvetrees told Mayor Taylor .at the council meeting last week that presently the Region has no plans for another dump site in Scugog, but by 1990, Durham will be looking for.a major dump up to 400 acres to handle garbage from all over the Region. Mr. Twelvetrees said there has been no serious search for a site this size. Mayor Taylor is concerned that when the existing Scugog site is filled, Township residents could end up paying more for garbage disposal if the trash has to be hauled to a dump site several miles away. Scales have been installed at the existing Scugog dump in an effort to extend its life expectancy, and once these scales have been certified, commercial garbage collectors from outside Scugog will be charged. The Region has negotiated a temporary dump site in North Whitby at the Heber Downs Conservation area for use in 1984, but this must first get approval through environmental hearings. As for the proposed expansion to the Scugog dump, Durham Region took out an option to purchase 100 acres immediately to the west, and hired -the geological consulting firm of Gartner Lee fissodidtess which carried out a series of tests last month. "Collection of this leachate by an engineered system does 'not appear to be feasible," says the report.
