All' households will be obliged to answer questions on age, sex, marital status, language, type of dwelling and whether the dwelling is owned or rented. A sample of households -- one in every five. - will . answer additional questions on such things as education, migration, income, housing, religion, occupation, and labour force participation. This kind of detailed census is carried out by the federal government every ten years, andthe informa- tion from the questionnaires will be compiled into statis- tical data showing popula- tion, housing and income figures. Among other things, one likely result of the' 1981 census, will be an increase in the number of seats in the House of Commons by about 30 to reflect the changes in population. Collecting this kind of detailed information about Canadians this year is a massive undertaking. Some 39,000 temporary employees have been hired for the collecting period, and the total cost of the census over the next four years in about $100 million. The census is taken under the authority of the federal Statistics Act, which prohibits disclosure - of any information which could identify any individual. ~ The questionnaires will be destroyed once the data has been transferred into computer banks, and those employees who see the forms are sworn to secrecy under the terms of the Act. Federal law also requires that all Canadians answer the questionnaires, and failure to do so or supplying false information could lead to a $500 fine and or three months in jail The slogan for this year's census taking is + "Count yourself in," and on June 3rd, some 24 million Canadians will have no choice but to do just that.
