We wish everyone a safe and enjoy- able summer holiday. Thanks Port High for five super years! Second French immersion class gets Board OK by Carol Hobbs Due to the lengthy waiting list for Kindergarten French Immersion next September and to the Durham Board of Education's decision to pro- vide teachers for "viable instruction units", a second immersion Kindergarten will commence at R. H. Cornish School, this September. While immersion has been offered by the Durham Board for the last four years, this will be the first opportu- nity to attend such classes in Scugog Township. Since there has been a growing interest over the past two years, a full grade one and two kindergarten classes are set to begin. The Region- wide popularity of the pro- gram is verified in the fact: that while three schools offered immersion last year, six will offer it this september. The immersion program provides all academic instruction in French until grade 3; at which time, English is introduced. Gradually, the English com- ponent is increased until by the end of public school, the bi-lingual child is able to converse or study in either language. The program is designed for the English- speaking child with English- speaking parents. Prior exposure to French is not required. Because of the decision to have a second kindergarten class a few more applicants can be accomodated. Any- one who has not yet regis- tered their child for kinder- garten may inquire about this program at R. H. Cornish School or by calling these numbers 985-3414 or 985-8908.
