Hosting the provincial midget playoffs for the second straight year is quite an honour for the Port Perry Minor Softball Association, and tournament director Vin Walker told the Star last week the committee under chairman Wayne Venning has been working hard with organizational details. There will be 23 teams competing in the double knock-out competition which assures each team at least two games. The Port Perry entry is the Malmont Farm squad coached by Ken Goreski and Hugh Johnston. The local team plays it first game Saturday morning July 4th against Ingleside. A complete schedule of all game times and diamond locations will be printed in the Port Perry Star the week prior to the tournament. Mr. Walker says that because of the large number of entries, three diamonds will be used for play: the two parks on the waterfront in Port Perry which are now both equipped with lights for night action, and the diamond in Raglan, south of Port Perry. He adds there is a chance that some games may also be played at the park in Seagrave, but that is not certain at this time. The list of teams includes the squad from Binbrook (Stoney Creek) which won the provincials last year and then went on to capture the Midget Canadian championship. There are teams entered from as far away as Owen Scugog ball hockey action Sound, Ingleside, Napanee, Belleville, Kitchener, Jordan, Hagersville, Etobi- coke, Oshawa, Acton and two each from Agincourt and North York. Action gets underway Friday, July 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at the three diamonds; and it is expected the final game will be held late Sunday afternoon or early evening. Two games end in knot Aztecs rout Hawks 8-3 A pair of ties highlighted Port Perry Ball Hockey league action, Monday June 1st as the Flames and Packers knotted a 3-3 and M&M Tire drew even with the Trojans by a 55 count. Aztecs upended J&D Hawks 8-3 in the other contest. Greg Fedyk paced the Flames attack as he scored an unassisted goal and set up the other .two by Ritchie LeFort and Ken Jeffrey. Aldon Smith also had a three point night at the other end of the rink as he scored twice and assisted on Ken Fraser's opening goal. Each team had a two goal scorer in the second contest that ended in a deadlock as Carl Durward struck twice for Trojans and J. Smith did the same for M&M. Len McEnaney, Jack Monsma, and J. Wilkinson rounded ou the M&M scoring. Bob Ireland, Dennis Franssen and Mark Cleveland each scored once as the Trojans gained the tie with 10:03 left. In two outings with Uxbridge they tied the first game 88 in Uxbridge and won the second game 11-1 back in Port. Dave Burnett, Lee Wilbur and Craig Menzies were the hitting power in the first game. Steve Solomon, Greg Warriner, Dave Burnett and Lee Wilbur hit well in the second game. In two outings with Good- wood the Mojacks won both games by a score of 16-6 and 5-1. Craig Menzies, Greg Warriner, Dave Burnett had numerous triples, doubles and singles. Jeff Cockerton also had a triple. Jeff Cockerton who has been on the mound for Port has been doing excellent job of pitching with Dave Burnett to back him up. Juniors split games On May 23 and 24 Port Perry Mothers Pizza Junior ball team travelled to Shar- bot Lake to take part in their first tournament of the year. The team played in mid season form, winning their first two games before bow- ing out, losing the third and fourth games. The opening game on Saturday was a 2 to 1 squeeker over Kingston. The opposing team scored early when the lead off batter doubled, to start the first inning, and scored on an error. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Heard lead off with a pinch hit single. Butler, running for Heard, advanced on Fedyks bunt single and scored when Dicksons' sharp hit was lobbled by the short stop. In the bottom of the seventh inning Walker led off with a double, was advanced by Durwards perfect bunt, "and scored on Healeys' toss out single to win the game. Kevin Walker struck out six and gave up only three hits to register his first win of the season. The second game, on Sunday morning, ended after 5 innings on the mercy rule with Port leading 11-2 over Odessa. The game pattern was set early as Wilbur hit a three run homer in the first . 'inning.
