Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh turns 60 on June 10th. One of the cards he'll receive was designed by an 18-year old Blackstock girl on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Society of Ontario. Marlene Parson, a grade 13 student at Cartwright. High School, became a member of the Gold Award Society last October, and this year the Society asked its members to submit card" designs for the Prince on his 60th birthday. Marlene says she worked many hours on the design, scrapping several before she came up with the one "she liked. She submitted it to the Society and learned about three weeks ago that it had been selected. The card measures about 14 by 12 and contains the Duke of Edinburgh crest . inside a maple leaf on the front cover, and birthday wishes in fancy scroll print on the inside. Marlene expects the card « will have more than 100 names 'of Society members here in Ontario by the time 1t arrives at Buckingham Palace. She will not receive any payment from the Gold Award Society for the card, "but says just having the design accepted is a '"privilege" and reward enough. While she's not expecting an invitation to the Royal Wedding" this summer, Marlene does'say it would be nice to get a thank-you note from the Queen and Prince. Youth pleads guilty A 16-year old Uxbridge area youth pleaded guilty in Ajax Provincial Court June 1st to a charge of careless driving and was fined $150 along with the loss of six licence points. The charge against David King stemmed from an incident last October 23rd, at the pedestrian cross-walk in front of R.H. Cornish School in Port Perry. The crossing guard was standing in the middle of the street allowing childrén to cross and alleged she was nudged from behind by the vehicle driven by King. King had originally been charged with dangerous driving, but pleaded guilty to 'the lesser charge of careless driving.
