| . Vandals strike Queen Street Queen Street merchants were disappointed and annoyed Monday morning: when they found a number of the barrels containing decorative plants turned over. Here Wayne Luke cleans up the mess created by vandals sometime late Sunday night or Monday morning. Man escapes injury after boat explodes A Whitby man narrowly escaped serious injury Sat- urday afternoon when an explosion on a boat rocked the Goreski Marina and Campground on Scugog Island. . Durham Police report that Craig Isherwood of Whitby suffered superficial burns to his arms, face and chest after a spark from a battery ignited gasoline fumes on the" cruiser which was moored at a slip on the west channel at the summer resort. The explosion blew out the windows of boats moored alongside and the force was felt at the main marina building serval hundred feet away. One eyewitness, Pat Bar- ton of Prince Albert, who was standing on a pier across the channel, told the Star later "the force rocked me and I could feel the wave of heat." Mr. Isherwood was appar ently in the process of gett- ing off the boat when explosion took place, accord- ing to police. Within secofids, the boat was completely engulfed in flames and had it not been for quick action by Allan Goreski, who works at the marina, the fire might have spread to other vessels touching off a chain reaction. Mr. Goreski jumped into ~the water and pulled the burning boat away from the dock and other boats. Other marina employees then used a boat to pull the vessel to the north end of the channel where it burned un- til Scugog firefighters arriv- ed on the scene. An eyewitness at the scene told the Star the action by Mr. Goreski jumping into the water to pull the burning boat away was 'heroic' and involved a lot of risk. Contacted later by the Star, Mr. Goreski said he had to get the boat away from the dock quickly or it could have set fire to others. He said fire extinguishers were useless because of the extent of the blaze. He did not suffer any in- juries as a result of his actions. By the time the fire was put out, there was nothing left of the upper structure, and paint on the hull was badly scorched and blis- tered. Durham Police estimate the damage at $8,000. In what he termed a pro- gress report on the new library, Dr. Cottrell told Vol. 115 No. 29 Scugog council Monday afternoon, the September 1 target date for starting con- struction looks "very real- . istic' at this time. However, the library committees will have a clearer picture of when con- struction can.start and what the cost of the 6700 square foot building will be when tender bids on the project are received about the mid- dle of July. In response to a question from area councillor Don Crosier about what the con- struction cost might be, Dr. Cottrell said he "would hes- (Turn to page 2) « 36 Pages Wayne Luke, owner of Luke's Country Store is mad. Arriving at work on Monday morning he found two of the planters in front of his store overturned and the earth and plants strewn all over the sidewalk and road. This is not the first case of vandalism on the planters' since they were placed along the street by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce about a month ago. Just a few days after they made their appearance, a number of the plants were pulled out and some of the small shrubs disappeared. Wednesday, June 17, 1981 Scugog Chamber of Commerce president Miriam Price told the Star Monday morning that they are very disappointed with the vandalism. "It's too bad this damage has taken place when the Chamber and Township have worked so hard to make the street look attractive." Mrs. Price said that the plants will be replaced and she hoped that those respon- sible would not repeat the vandalism. But storeowner Wayne Luke decided to go one step further in an effort to curb | Merchant offers reward | if vandals convicted the damage. He has offered a $200 reward to anyone who can give information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of those respon- sible for the damage. "I just don't want to see this continue", he said. 'Maybe if they are convicted they will realize the serious- ness of their prank." In the meantime, the .merchants along the street and in the plazas will try to keep the planters in good 'shape so that they will enhance the appearance of the town. Scugog firefighters hose down what is left of a cruiser which exploded and caught fire Saturday afternoon while docked at Goreski's Marina on Scugog Island. The explosion had such force it rocked the marina, and the burning vessel was pulled into the channel away from other boats. [see story]. 'a TRA LAY Fa end ge a Cha ea 3 Bt en oA oy a a a re .
