boy RE Rade 958s bd Rev. Reg Rose offers prayers during the annual Blessing of the Boats ceremony held Sunday at Port Perry yacht Club. Standing behind Rev. Rose is vice-Commodore Jim Cline. Blessing of the Boats is A traditional and time honoured ceremony was held by Port Perry Yacht Club Sunday afternoon. : Rev. Reg Rose of Port Perry conducted the Bles- sing of the Boats Service, _and following that Club Commodore Bill Willis took the salute from club members who -dipped their flags in the Sail Past. The Blessing of the Boats and Sail Past has been held by the Yacht Club for many Years. It is an age-old tradition of asking for God's blessing of all boats and all sailors who go the sea. The sail past is thought to have developed with the formation of yacht clubs late in the 1800's. Courtesy dictated that each time a vessel met the commodore's boat, the flag would be dipped out of respect. However, that got a bit tiresome for the commodore, who was constantly having to lower his flag to return the salute. So, the once a year Sail Past was introduced, and most yacht clubs main- tain the event still. The Port Perry Yacht Club WALLACE MARLOW Co.
