This year, there were more entry classes which provided an added incentive to the rose growers. The meeting was opened by President Valerie Hundert who welcomed guests from Hampton, Whitby and Oshawa. Expressions of appreciation were given to those who contributed their time and efforts to the sale table and float at the Brooklin Spring Fair. The conveners were Betty Van Buuren and Diane Rothnie respectively. A special thanks went to Rene Thiebaud for providing transportation to and from the Ontario Horticultural Association Convention, held in Niagara Falls. Mrs. Hundert also congratulated Joan Brak on receiving Honourable Mention for her flower arrangement at the Convention. , Secretary Joan Brak read the correspondence and thanked Marg Powell, Audrey Young and Marie Ferguson for their assis- tance in making corsages and boutonnieres for the graduating class at Meadow- crest School. She then gave a very interesting report on the O.H.A. Convention held recently in Niagara Falls. Gordon Wick announced that the Oshawa Garden Club is holding a rose show on Saturday, June 27 at the McLaughlin Art Gallery. Diane Rothnie introduced the speaker for the evening, Mrs. Bertha Barnes from the Bowmanville Society, who spoke on "Growing and Showing Gladioli". Her down-to-earth approach to her subject was appreciated by all and her talk was liberally laced with witticisms and good old- fashioned know-how and evidenced a great love for her chosen hobby. Mrs. Barnes encouraged her listeners to join a Gladiolus society and learn what to buy and what to do with what you buy. The writer thanked the speaker. Margaret Davis read the. Treasurer's Report follow- ing which the awards for the evening were announced: Prize for Best Red Rose, donated by Red Rose Tea Co., was won by Audrey Young and this familiar grower also had the Best Specimen Rose in the show. Best Decorative award, donated by Pro Hardware, went to Dorothy Barter of Whitby. Show Convener, 'Lyla Allan advised that there were 131 entries. Dorothy Sandford did an admirable judging job as it was a most difficult task, considering the toll the weather had taken of our gardens. She provided those present with several helpful hints on showing. Our next show will be held at Fairview Lodge, on Saturday, July 25. This is our first ever, July show, so please come out; bring an entry and bring a friend.
