The performance by the 1981 boys of summer was equally unsuccessfull. They were beaten-10-3 by Ingleside in the first game and ousted 5-3 by Don Victoria in the second. Two rocky innings by left- hander Mark Goreski created the lion's share of Port's downfall. The first year midget gave up seven runs in the first extra inning against Ingleside and four more in the first against Don Victoria. They were the only innings he threw in the tournament but took the losses in both affairs. Righthander Phil Robin- son, who threw with more velocity than his teammate throughout the two games, came on to start the second and checked Don Victoria on one run through the remain- ing six innings. Goreski cause wasn't helped by shortstop Peter Oosterholt in the first frame. Oosterholt bobbled a ground ball and then booted an easy force out at second with a wide throw. With runners in scoring position Bobby Halkidis, lined a single into left field to drive in a run Mike Pett singled in another before Scott McCallum drove home the last two with a grounder past Robinson, who was playing second base at the time. Port's three runs came from a surprising power source- outfielder Stan Glass Jr. He was credited with the- run batted in all three times. He was batting ninth in the' order, the last spot usually reserved for weaker hitters. Trembley reached scor- ing position with an opposite field single and a sacrifice bunt by John Vaz. Two innings later Glass knocked in Trembley again with a base hit. Trembley had tripled. Don Victoria got its only run off Robinson in the fifth. Speedy lead off hitter Mike Forster singled and stole second. He advanced to third base on an infield out and second when Halkidis beat out a slow roller to second sacker Ken Harmon. Oosterholt gave those beleagured home town fans something to cheer about when he led off the home half of the fourth inning by depositing Bobby Shaver's pitch over the short center- field wall against Ingleside. That first game for Port was played at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the old Lakefront diamond. Trembley added another run in the same frame when he was waved in from third base on an illegal pitch, the fifth called against Shaver. He would later be called for it again, bringing the total to six. Robinson had three called on him. Port's first run also came in via the illegal pitch ruling Va-3 walked, took second on an illegal pitch, and walked home the same way. Port led 3-1 heading into the sixth but a line drive by Jamie Gogan drove in runners from second and third. Goreski came in to start the eighth, the first extra inning, and was turned every which way but loose. By the time Ingleside hitters had finished taking batting practice, seven runs had crossed the plate, sending the hosts to the losers side of the draw. Danny says goodbye It's with regret the Star announces that sports writer Danny Millar will no longer be contributing reports to these pages after this week. Danny has moved to Oshawa, is attending summer school there and working for the Canada Farm Labour Pool as well. For the past three years, Danny has been a regular writer for the Star, covering minor hockey, baseball, high school basketball and other sports events. While there may be some who didn't always agree with the way Danny saw the action, that is one of the hazards of any kind of news- paper reporting. 5 - we = SCUGOG FIREFIGHTERS P} CHUM Ordinary Superstars 6th ANNUAL SOFTBALL GAME SAT, JULY 11-7:00 P.M. = at JOE FOWLER MEMORIAL PARK : -AllProceeds going to Muscular Dystrophy - We are sorry to see Danny go, and we wish him well. We feel certain that his career as a sports writer is anything but over. The Star will continue to give local sports action as much coverage as possible because we think that sports is a vital part of the community's affairs. Any team wishing regular coverage should submit write-ups to the Star office no later than Monday at noon hour. And if there are any young, aspiring sports reporters who would like to get their feet wet, they can contact John McClelland at 985-7612, or drop into the Star Office at 235 Q Street VS.
