A ---------- Scugog Mayor Jerry Tay- lor says the Township gar- bage dump should be closed on Saturday afternoons. Mayor Taylor raised the issue at a meeting of council Monday evening, and the reaction from councillors was mixed. He stated that closing the dump Saturday afternoons -might extend the life expec- tancy because large comm- ercial trucks are now using the dump in Scugog if they miss getting to disposal sites in the south of the Region before they shut down Sat- urdays at noon. He said he has been told there "'are sometimes eight or ten large trucks lined up to dump trash" on Saturday afternoons. And he said: these trucks are coming from the southern part of Durham Region. The dump on Regional U.I.C. cheques available at U.A.W. building Scugog Township residents receiving, unemployment insurance benefits can pick up their cheques during the mail strike at the United Auto Workers building, 44 Bond St. East, Oshawa. A spokesman for the UIC office in Oshawa told the Star last week that those people receiving benefits must take their reporting cards either to the U.A.W. building, or to the Canada Manpower Office at 44 Bond St. West, Oshawa. The U.A.W. office in Oshawa is open from 10 to 4 each week day, while the UIC office is open from 8:15 to 4:30. Highway 12 accident (From page 1) Bakermans of 30 Park Rd. North, Pickering. Bailey was taken to Sunny- brook Hospital in Toronto suffering from head injuries and he was reported to be in good condition Monday morning. Bakermans was taken to Oshawa General Hospital with a fractured arm and collar bone. A passenger in the Baker- mans vehicle, Ann St. Pierre was released from hospital after treatment for cuts and bruises. The accident' was still under investigation as of Monday morning." There was no estimate of the damage to the two vehicles. The spokesman said that claimants picking up UIC cheques must present their social insurance cards and one other piece of identi- fication. And anyone picking up a cheque for someone on UIC maternity or sick benefits must have written author- ization from that person, along with proper identi- fication. A spokesman for the federal Health and Welfare office in Oshawa told the Star that anyone who has not received the Old Age or Canada Pension cheque for June should report this by calling 576-7901 in Oshawa, or go in person to the office on the 2nd floor, Old Bell Tower, Oshawa Shopping Centre. The spokesman said that because the next cheques are not due to go out until the end of July, no plans have been complete at this time for alternate methods of delivering them. "We are hoping the strike will be over by the end of this month," said - the spokesman. However, he added that if the strike is not over when the cheques are due to go out, contingency plans for picking up the cheque will be - in place. The Family Allowance (baby bonus) cheques for July are due to be mailed out on the 15th of this month. If the mail strike is not settled by then, the Star will carry information in next week's paper about where Family Allowance cheques can be picked up. And if Scugog has to get rid of its garbage by trucking it elsewhere, the cost to Township residents is going to increase. The suggestion by the Mayor got support from Ward 3 councillor John Will- iams who said "I can see nothing wrong with closing the dump at noon on Sat- urdays." However, both councillors Don Crosier and Lawrence Malcolm expressed reser- vations about the suggestion 'now take a load of yard or household trash to the dump on Saturdays. "There could be a lot of complaints from people who £ Bad «Tre igs ENE i LEY BF FEE | TR 4 LEAT (RA can't get to the dump before the noon closing time," said councillor Malcolm. But he did say that any decision to do this should not take effect until late fall. Scugog council does not have the power to order the dump closed at noon on Saturdays, but the council can ask Durham Region to do so. The dump now remains open until 4:00 p.m. on Sat- urdays. Weigh scales and charges for household trash in excess of 220 pounds went into effect this years as one effort to extend the life ex- pectancy of the dump. The Region also conducted soil tests on 100 acres just to the west of the present dump, but these indicated that site is not suitable for a garbage dump. Mayor Taylor summed up his concerns by stating: "When our dump is filled up, Scugog is going to have one heck of a time finding a place to put our garbage." Council took no action on the suggestion at the meet- ing Monday evening, but the issue will likely be raised again before the end of the summer.
