Further north on Cochrane, the home now owned by Dr. Matthew Dymond, former MPP, is also a fine example of this design. These homes were built mainly between 1870 and 1880, but were not based on any single design from Italy. One of the most notable features is the three-storey tower at the front of the home. The Bigelow House was built in 1876 by Joseph Bigelow, a businessman who was probably the most influential individual in the early history of the com: munity. He was involved in shipping, lumber, road build- ing and the bringing of the railway to the community. Along with the commen- tary of the distinct archi- tectural features of these homes, Mr. Arculus, who wore a black top hat for the occasion, related stories of some of the more colourful characters who lived in the community. One such gentleman kept a coffin for himself and his ~ wife in the living room. But on his death, his. widow burned the coffins in the " backyard. He also had a habit of borrowing pocket knives and not returning them, and apparently would up with a bushel basket full of small knives. This coming Sunday, the second half of the walking tour will be held through lower Port Perry, including the business section. It will get underway at 2:00 PM at Town. Hall, 1873 with Mr. Arculus as guide. *Used Trailers & Motor Homes *Complete Motor Home Service *Propane Filling Station Call ELGIN Ioce ELGIN KNOPP - PROPRIETOR Hwy. 7A - 985-9151 - SALES SERVICE RENTALS er *Rentals *Parts Dept. *Trailer Service (in park) Port Perry 2 ciation to everyone for interest shown.
