The Mary St. driveway has been a contentious issue surrounding a proposal by the IGA store to add about 5000 square feet of space onto the west side of the building. If the addition goes ahead, freight doors for the store would be located at the rear of the building and the drive- way onto Mary St. would be used by delivery trucks. Residents of Mary St. have been less than enthused with the idea of the driveway, claiming it will increase the truck traffic on the residential street. At the council meeting July 6, area councillor Don Crosier suggested that the driveway be used as an "exit" only which would mean that trucks would enter the IGA property from John Street to the east. That suggestion was endorsed by residents of Mary St. present at the meeting with spokesman Brian Callery stating '"'we could live with it as an exit only." . Although there was no action taken by council on whether to turn the driveway into an "exit only" the matter will be raised when Scugog council and officials meet with representatives of the IGA store to work out final details of a site plan agreement covering the store expansion proposals. Once the site plan has been signed by the Township and IGA store, the way will be clear for Scugog to issue a building permit for the 5000 square foot addition. Along with the Mary Street driveway, the other conten- tious issue surrounding the proposed addition is the possibility of flooding of a small creek which runs under the area of the addition. Scugog's consulting engineers now agree that with flood-proofing measures, the proposed addition will not increase the risk of flooding from what it is at the present. However, the Township wants a clause in the site plan agreement stating that if a flood does result during a severe storm, the IGA store will not hold the municipality responsible in any way for damages. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor said after the July 6 meeting, he expects Town- ship officials will meet with IGA store reps in the near future to discuss and possibly sign thé site plan agreement. Mr. Callery told the meeting last week that if the driveway onto Mary St. is designated as an "exit" only, he would expect that it be signed and that the Township would enforce the reg- ulations to ensure that no trucks or other traffic use the driveway as an entrance. Lot owners to get break on permits Scugog Township council last week agreed that the municipality can issue residential building permits for lots now designated in the E0000 £ In the event of a continuation of the interruption of postal service, 5 = Unemployment Insurance Benefit cheques may be picked up in person atthe E £ U.AW. H (holding) zone of the new comprehensive by-law. The move was taken by council so that the lot owners who wish to build homes can take advantage of the summer construction season, rather than having to wait until the lots are officially re-designated residential, a process that could take weeks or months. Township administrator Earl Cuddie says there are four owners of lots who will be taking out permits and there could be another three or four in the same position. The lots were zoned residential under the old by- laws but were inadvertently included in the holding zone when the new by-law was being prepared. Council agreed earlier this year to officially re- designate the lots back to residential zoning, but the process won't be complete for a few months.
