The next time someone wags a finger at you and calls you a "water dirtier," confront them with these facts from the Allied Boating Association of Canada: The major conclusions of a three-year, $750,000 study were that outboard motor operation -- even at three times "saturation boating levels' -- does not harm water quality, does not cause discernible changes in plant and animal life and repro- duction, or affect the taste of fish taken from test ponds. The scientists who con- ducted these tests attempted to cover all the bases. There were laboratory phases of the study for essential analysis, but the real obser- vations and testing utilized natural bodies of water. The research teams studied both long-term and short-term Ag minister will retire Deputy Minister of Agri- culture and Food Kenneth Lantz will retire on Septem- ber 1, 1981, after 36 years with the ministry. A graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College, Mr. Lantz joined the former Department of Agriculture as assistant agricultural representative in Middlesex County. He became agricul- tural representative in Stormont County and later transferred to Kent County. In 1958, Mr. Lantz came to Toronto as associate director of the Extension Branch and was appointed director of extension in 1960. Three years later he became assistant deputy minister in charge of the Production and Rural Development Divis- ion, and in 1978 he was appointed deputy minister. During his career, Mr. Lantz has served agriculture in many capacities. He was both vice-chairman and chairman of the Agricultural Rehabilitation and Develop- ment Directorate of Ontario from 1963 to 1880. He served from 1966 to 1972 as the first chairman of the Crop Insur- ance Commission of Ontario. At present he is vice- president of the Inter- 'national Farm Management Association and a director of the 'Royal Agricultural' Winter Fair. Chemical effects of engine operation on water quality' were also' closely checked. In addition, the study probed both cold water lakes (subject to a 'rest period" during the winter freeze) "and warm water lakes (subject to boating use 'twelve months a year). Comparisons were made between leaded and unleaded fuel, and between -drainless and older engines with crankcase drains. In short, the scientists were looking for trouble and didn't find it! If the marine engines are causing harm to the water in ' which they operate, the most sophisticated scientific testing methods and equip- ment known are unable to detect it. Boaters can be sure they aren't fouling the water they enjoy so much! » : 'y v. § v '> wf ' La J » ' by PN RE EL Ao BL 17 3 FX s 7d ASI RA A A dl SA rin hall Re bitidon Jinesvoiilbe. oMiund ig miviniib oddone iot i sui oR Fog SN Ie RT AAT LE SNE RR SRF aL TT AF al aA RIAL. 44% el mn asd.
