No way, says Scugog council Scugog Township council has no interest in jointly setting up a fire hall in Seagrave with Mariposa Township, but Scugog might consider discussing an agreement in which Mari- posa would buy fire protec- tion services from Scugog for residents in the south end of Mariposa. The matter was" raised Monday by councillor John Wolters who said he had informal discussions with a Mariposa councillor about the possibility of sharing a fire hall in Seagrave with each municipality supplying one truck. There are two subdivisions close to Seagrave, but in Mariposa Township which presently are served by the fire department in Little Britain, a distance of about 12 miles. A fire hall in Seagrave could also serve Scugog Township residents in -that community and surrounding area. However, members of council made it clear Mon- day that the cost of setting up a sub-station in Seagrave would be high, even if shared jointly by Mariposa, and for this reason, council indi- cated it would not pursue the idea. However, if Scugog Fire chief Jack Cook has no objections, council would be willing to try to negotiate a purchase of service agree- ment with Mariposa, so that the two subdivisions in that " Thumbs down on fire hall Township would get fire pro- tection from Scugog. These kinds of agreements between municipalities are not unusual, as Scugog purchases fire protection ~ services from Uxbridge for people living in the north- west corner of Scugog. Help for Greenbank wells The provincial Ministry of the Environment has agreed to pay for a study of private wells in the hamlet of Green- bank which may come up with methods to improve the quality of water there. Several Greenbank resi- dents haved complained over the past couple of years that their wells have become contaminated through winter road salting opera- tions, complaints similar to those registered by residents of Manchester. Scugog council was in- formed by letter last month Council reverses liquor position (From page 1) never been in favour of the council voicing an opinion on the liquor licence applica- tion. The resolution to withdraw the resolution carried easily with only Regional Coun- cillor Lawrence Malcolm voting against it. Councillor Malcolm said after the meeting he would have preferred to see the ~ restaurant open this summer without a liquor permit, something which the owners have not done. : "I think if they opened the restaurant and proved to people it was not just a drinking spot, they wouldn't have trouble getting the permit later," he said. Ward two councillor Bob Espey, who has consistently expressed concerns about the liquor licence for the restaurant was not present at Monday's meeting. Councillor Espey, a lawyer, was in court all - afternoon, but he told the Star after the meeting that he still feels the same about the matter. "I haven't seen any evidence to change my mind. There has been no new information on this appli- cation," he said. He said he has always been concerned about safety if the licence was granted, in light of the fact that Caesarea is a small community with very narrow streets and the restaurant is right across from a park used by children. Mentioning the fact that this is the third time 'the council has changed its posi- tion on the liquor licence application, he said 'the council is looking foolish." 'that the Environment Ministry has agreed to pay for a consulting engineer to identify the problem, review alternatives and make recommendations. Although agreeing to pay for the study, the letter makes it clear that a com- mitment of money for correcting the problem has not been made. In Manchester, where the problem of contaminated wells is more widespread than in Greenbank, the provincial highways depart- ment agreed to pay 75 per cent of the cost of new wells with the rest to be paid by the homeowners. A new deep well was drilled early this summer in Manchester, but a final report has not yet been dealt with by the provincial government. It is not known when the provincial government will hire a consulting engineer to start work on the report for the Greenbank well problems. JOGGERS for BOYS Special Line Region push for computer centre here Durham Region is being considered for a new $10 million computer training and research centre to be set up by the provincial govern- ment, and Regional chair- man Gary Herrema is actively lobbying to get the centre for Durham. In a statement to the pro- vincial Ministry of Industry and Tourism last week, Mr. Herrema said locating the centre in Durham would benefit existing companies such as General Motors and Lake Ontario Steel, and would provide a stimulus in bringing new industry to this area. Mr. Herrema also said the move would "bring to the forefront the government of Ontario's intention to encourage industrial devel- opment in the prime, Assorted FALL congestion-free areas immediately east of Toronto." Although the city of Cam- bridge is also being men- tioned as a possible location for the new centre, three municipalities in Durham have already set aside land just in case the province selects this Region. In Oshawa, there is a potential site near Durham College in the city's north end; Whitby has a site near Brooklin, and there is a site in the south end of Ajax. Mr. Herrema is quoted last week as saying he feels Durham has a pretty good change of being the location chosen by the provincial government. That decision is expected to be announced in September.
